Bay Islands – Roatan, Utila and Guanaja (Honduras)
Roatan, the biggest, is expensive & more luxurious, but well worth-it for the long stretches of white sandy beaches. Utila attracts more of a backpacker crowd & is ‘proper’ Caribbean island living, but also great for partying & swimming with whale sharks. Guanaja, only accessible by plane, is again more upscale, known as the ‘Venice of Honduras’.
WorldGuide: Honduras

La Mosquitia (Honduras)
The rumours (drug-smuggling, lost cities, military training) about the barely accessible La Mosquitia are renowned. What is for sure is that it’s only accessible on tours - the dates of which are sporadic. Remote jungles, wild cats & howler monkeys, twilight riverboat journeys & tribes make it all worthwhile for the lucky few who make it in.
WorldGuide: Honduras

Copan Ruinas (Honduras)
Famous for the Mayan ruins, the ruins are impressive, but nothing compared to those in Mexico. Copan is one of the most picturesque towns in Honduras & there’s a lot to see in the area. There’s a Maya Chorti tribe living on the outskirts – ask one of them to give you a tour & they’ll show you an old Mayan hospital, among other impressive ruins.
WorldGuide: Honduras

Tegucigalpa (Honduras)
Most people try to avoid the sprawling city, but the majority also have to come here to make onward journeys. It’s not all that bad. The Statue of Christ is worth a look & downtown can be good for culture – art, orchestras and opera. In the surrounding mountains you’ll find Valle de Angeles – a typical artisan town & La Tigra – a cloud forest.
WorldGuide: Honduras

Lago de Yajoa (Honduras)
This huge, peaceful lake halfway between Honduras’ main cities, San Pedro Sula & Tegucigalpa, is a bit of a hidden gem from the backpacker trail. Locals have rowing boats & will take you onto the lake for a tranquil afternoon. The D&D Micro-brewery is a great place to stay – they have cabins in tropical gardens & make their own tasty beer on-site.
WorldGuide: Honduras

Amapala, El Tigre (Honduras)
Barely untouched &unseen by tourists, the inactive volcano island of El Tigre is Latin island-living at its rawest.Nothing much happens here, giving visitors time to absorb life going on around them.Ask a taxi (man with a truck!) to drive you round the island-the unspoilt scenery is astounding. You can see Honduras,Nicaragua & El Salvador all at once.

interesting bit of info but, sorry, things were very different when I was there in 1990. I guess this is all up to date travel info, still worth reading though and comparing with personal experiences from quite a few years ago.

Hey everybody,
1) I do recommend too "La mosquitia". The problem with mosquitia is how hard it is to get there, and get get a little bit expensive. but once you are there its incredible. It is know internationally as "little amazons". dense and exotic. A real adventure holds this jungles. Not only the amount of animals you'll be able to see, but the views are spectacular.

But i wouldn't recommend Tegucigalpa as a tourist attraction. It is just a normal central American city with not much things to do.

3) Bay islands

Roatan is more expensive than Utila, but has more things to offer.
Utila is a perfect place for backpackers!

4) Punta Sal
This national park is located at the coastal city of Tela. perfect for scuba diving, and a relaxing day at a really exotic beach.

5) Cusuco National Park

The national park has such an immense importance that it is visited by Opwall (www.opwall.com) a scientific expedition that visit no more than 6 other places in the world.

6) Copan

It should be illegal to come to Honduras and not visit Copan, the Mayan world is unique. Honduras has the Mayan capital of the world.
