I'm going to India for 2 weeks in February! It's not very long so it'd be great if I can get some recommendations for must-see sights!

We've finally settled on this itinerary: Mumbai--Rajasthan--Goa

We're travelling in and out of Mumbai and would like to spend 4 days in Goa.

What are the must-see sights/ cities in Rajasthan with minimum travel time in between? (Jaisalmer is too far! & we only want to travel by plane in and out of Rajasthan!)

Initial thoughts are Delhi--Agra--Jaipur--Jodhpur--Udaipur, but perhaps that's too many places for 9 days.

Thanks!!

Cherie

Thanks!

We've settled on Mumbai--Jodhpur--Jaipur--Agra--Delhi--Goa.

I think the easiest way to travel within Rajasthan is by hiring a car + driver.

Any recommendations/ the how-to's/ approximate costs?

Looks like you will just have to contact individual agencies because the rates are variable:

Hi Cherie,

Are you flying in and out of Delhi? Delhi-Agra-Jaipur-Jodhpur-Udaipur sounds like a good plan for 2 weeks. Driving distances are long. Travel time between cities is an average of 4-5 hours. I agree about Jaisalmer being too far for a short trip.

I'm not sure you could fit in Mumbai and Goa. If you haven't already booked your tickets, you could fly into Delhi and out of Mumbai. Or pick one between Jodpur and Udaipur and take a direct flight to Goa from Jaipur.

Gosh, sorry I answered your earlier post prematurely. Okay, now that you have a plan, you can start worrying about the logistics. Yes, the easiest way of doing Rajasthan is by hiring a car/driver. The prices are really reasonable. You need to email a couple of agencies and ask for a quotation for your specific itinerary.

Email me at sharon1306 at yahoo dot com, and I could suggest agents I have used in the past and have been happy with.

For Delhi, the area called Paharganj is full of places to stay for budget travelers/backpackers. Its near the railway station and close to Connaught Place.

In the CP area there are some Guest Houses recommended in my LP guide: Ringo Guest House, Sunny Guest House, Central Court Hotel.

For Jaipur, again from my LP, there's Hotel Pearl Palace, Jaipur Inn, Atithi Guest House, etc.

For Jodhpur: Haveli Guest House, The Blue House, Yogi's Guest House.

Usually what you do is find the area of the city or town that is the backpacker "ghetto" (all places frequented by western tourists have one), and shop around--ask to see the room before you take it, haggle the price to something that works for you and your host, and off you go.
Two weeks is not very much time in India, heck, two years is not much time in india! Best to keep your itinerary tight, and in one area of the country. Traveling around, even by private car is unpredictable at best--the roads are much better in the north, but it might take you as much as three days to drive mumbai to delhi, depending on conditions and fate. It's a fair distance, and a long day of driving might get you 300 kilometers. Night driving is not recommended.
Delhi is a much easier city than Mumbai to negotiate for travelers, so I would recommend going there first.
Things we are used to having right away take much more time in India, so I would keep your plans a bit loose or you may be frustrated and disappointed that you aren't able to do everything in your agenda.
If you get there early february, message me if you wish, I'll be in the Paharganj for a few days plotting my own course!
