The difference between rich and wealthy (as told by Chris Rock).

Michael Jordan is rich.
The person that signs his paycheck is wealthy.

Wealth, to me, means having FU money.

From Merriam Webster Dictionary: abundance of valuable material possessions or resource

From BusinessDictionary.com: General: Tangible or intangible thing that makes a person, family, or group better off.

I prefer the latter definition because to me, a huge part of being wealthy means having good health (one of those more "intangible" things) which is critical for happiness!

Re FU money:

I hadn't heard of that concept before.

A thought on it - so if you just don't need or value or care about having money; it would be sufficient to have $2 to be able to tell someone to Fu.. Off

$2 = wealth if you have the right attitude towards it and are capable of satisfying your needs and wants without it.

Paul,

yes, that's "wealth".

Two dollars might be a low number (in the US) but yes, that's the concept.

So Trump is NOT wealthy because he owes a lot of money, but the retired teacher next door who has her house paid off, gets a pension and doesn't owe any money to anyone is.

Look at Michael Jackson for example. He made $200 million a year but he was spending $250 million.
That's not wealthy.

Absolutely, but it takes self control, change of lifestyle and perseverance.

Easier said then done.

For me 'wealthy' has nothing to do with money at all. Inner 'happiness' is all thats needed, money cannot and never will able to buy that.

Right, that's part of it.

"Wealth" is not defined by an amount. However, waking up in the morning and not having to owe the credit card companies or banks any money would sure make me a very happy person indeed smile.gif

i definately believe what paula has said
one could have a great wealth of knowledge therefore they are wealthy and that has nothing to do with money

with the whole money cant buy happiness argument i question the validity of that statement.

there's a movie called "Orange County" quirky film with tom hanks' son Colin in it and in a scene Colin Hanks says to his mother played by catherine o'hara that "money cant buy you happiness" to which she replies "oh grow up yes it can" - ive always found that scene hilarious and thought provoking because whilst alot will say it cant in actual fact money can buy happiness
most people refer to money not being able to buy one's internal happiness but what about external (minus family, friends, good health and love)

would you say money cant buy happiness to those who dont know where their next meal is coming from, those who barely make rent payments or are homeless or those who need $$$ in order for a life saving operation etc etc

im not saying you need millions to be happy but you do need it
and if your able to buy a house (outright) car, take yourself off travelling the world, keep yourself and family fed and clothed etc etc in the end these things would make/keep you happy

Yes, I would. I think back to an experience I had in the Peruvian jungle when I think about happiness. I had the great fortune to spend some time in the jungle living alongside a number of native piro-indians. These people and their families had nothing, in terms of any material things. They ate whatever they found in the jungle to eat, they had no house, just a small shelter made from sticks - no running water, no electricity, no gas, nothing - yet they were the happiest people I have had the opportunity to meet. They seemed to want for nothing, everything they needed was right there - and they laughed - a lot, all the time. Fantastic.

They showed me a completely different side of how to live, they just relied on each other. They had a much, much bigger sense of community and sharing than I've ever seen.

What an experience indeed!
I wish I can one day get there too.
The same things I can say for the people in Cuba where there is a smile on every person living on that island, as well as the people in Thailand! I was amazed as well.

wow that wouldve been an experience and i very much see your point to which i cannot argue but the only thing i was trying to get across was that to say "money cant buy happiness" is, to me, a little naive in some respects but you are absolutely right that there are people in this world that live without many many material things/ money and are extremely happy which in turn makes what i wrote seem like a moot point?
