We are in the middle of the slow season here in Nepal; and for all you globe trekkers out there, that means even better bargains than you already get here. If you are in Asia traveling already, this might be a good time to book a flight to Kathmandu and have some fun. There are a few things that it is just to cold for right now, but the sun is bright during the day and warms things up (the nights get cold) so it's perfect for outdoor activities. There are literally hundreds of tour operators in Kathmandu that will be happy to give you the "off season" price. Here are some things I think are perfect for this time of year:
Bike Hikes -- Mountain biking through the KTM valley and surrounding area.
Rock Climbing -- the cool weather is perfect for this.
Trekking -- the passes will be freezing, but you will not have your path crowded with other tourists.
City Tours-- Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur have amazing ancient temples, and Newari architecture that is unique to Nepal.
Village Stay -- I would recommend a place like Bandipur, or Shreebahn that is tourist friendly but still authentic.
Pony Trek -- these leave from Pokhara, and can be 1-2 days.
Paragliding -- also from Pokhara.
Here's what I would avoid at the moment:
Anything in the water (rafting, kayaking, canyoning)
Tibet Tour (freezing there)
Peak Climbing (season is finished)
Any trek that is really difficult (ice and cold will be a problem).
Here some companies that I like, but there are many good ones so shop around when you come. For those who don't have time for "shopping" the following come highly recommended:
Biking First -- www.bikingfirst.com
(Biking -- guided and rentals)
D'Tours Original -- www.dtoursoriginal.com
(Any tour; Rickshaw city tour of Kathmandu)
Hardcore Nepal -- www.hardcorenepal.com
Adrenaline Rush -- www.adrenalinenepal.com
(Trekking and Paragliding)
Most activities on the off season will cost you around $40 per day; high season $60-70.
It's a great time to come to Nepal.
