These caves were created between the 5th and 10th centuries by Buddhists. Ajanta's best caves will soon be beyond reach. Concerned about the damage caused by generations of visitors' breath on the murals, the authorities are building a massive replica of the finest examples in the car park before closing them to all but scholars.
