Im currently in Cambodia - Siem Reap. Will be heading out of here next weekend - either to make way up through Laos or head up to Chiang Mai. My interest is to see jungle/country and splash around in some water -be it lakes/waterfalls/whitewater rafting/tubing. I like the idea of 'getting off the beaten track'
I have two weeks. Would people recommend Laos / Northern Thailand?

many thanks in anticipation

I quite liked Khao Yai National Park, in Thailand. We went for a hike in the jungle there, it was fun.

I didn't do any water things, but the hike was good.

Hi Mudler,

If you like to be "off the beaten track", I would not recommend Chiang Mai. I am living currently in CM, it is obviously much more crowded than any other place of Laos.
I would recommend Laos, coming from Cambod, start by :
- southern "SiPan Dong" the 4000 Thousand island, on the Mekong.
- Plateau of Boloven : nice lanscape, wonderfull water falls
- then Vientiane, If you like shopping, dont forget to pass by one boutique near Namphou which I love "Elégant Boutique", they sell very nice clothing for women and men. Bueatifull shop.

If you like tubing, you can go to Vang Vieng, but personnaly I dont like it cos it is too crowded place although it is beautiful ! But destroyed by the atmostphere of tourism !!!

Then, if you like jungle, go to the northern part of Laos, as Luang Namtha, or Phongsaly (even more lost) to make treeking.

Good trip

I'm no expert, but I recently went to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai...I loved Chiang Rai. Really beautiful. Not sure about water sports. You could easily explore Laos from there too.

Just an idea...

Chiang Mai is pretty touristy though still nice for jungle and waterfall stuff. I hear good things about Namtha though. Dunno.

Go thru Laos instead. Chiang Mai has been really tame and touristy in comparison.
