My 12 year old son has an opportunity to travel to Johannesburg with his soccer team to attend a school team tournament there in June. I am a little bit worried about how safe Johannisburg is nowadays. Any comments? What about vaccinations? Is it a Malaria region? Thanks. Carmen

My son is attending the World Cup in South Africa next year, so I look forward to a reply to this post. It least I know Jo'burg is nowhere near a malaria area, so that's one thing you don't have to worry about.

My son arrives at the airport at noon, and his first match is in Bloemfontein at 16:00. Will he make it? Will he be able to get from the airport to the stadium in time?

Hello,

Many thanks for your timely advice. My son is travelling alone on a very tight budget. He has already found out that he would be unlikely to be able to attend the match in Bloemfontein on the 27th. June, so he will forego that one and go straight to Durban for his second match.

As a matter of interest, if anyone you know is interested in purchasing his tickets, please let me know.

As a post script, my son had a wonderful time in South Africa. He visited Jo'burg, Cape Town, Durban as well as Vic Falls and Kruger Park. His only problem was getting rammed in the rear while stopped at a traffic light by a visiting Dutch family (who admitted guilt).

My wife and I plan to visit next year.
