I going backpacking through Europe in March for a few weeks. I'd like to get a new backpack for this trip, but I'm a little lost.
I wondering what size is best as a universal backpack I can use on a week long trip and a month long trip? What brand do you recommend?

Do you travel with a smaller day bag?



I want a bag that will last too.

Hey Jake. I usually take one small bag when I go away for less than a week.

For a week or more, I take a small daypack and a medium bag for everything else.

My favourite brands are Eagle Creek and Jack Wolfskin.

If you want a bag that will last, make sure it doesn't have any zippers. Those are the parts that break first.

The general advice that most people give, is buy the smallest bag possible. You will regret a big bag, because it will inevitably get filled up with heavy things.

I go with NorthFace as I have found that is really long lasting and has more than enough space. If I am going for long periods of time I have my large Northface pack with my smaller Northface backpack with the Water Bladder inside.

It all really depends on how long you are going for.

My Backpack is Berghaus 60 litre + 15 litre day sack im traveling SE Asia for 3 and half months then going to Australia for a year. I was looking at mine last night thinking how am i going to fit everything and what should i take :-S.

I recommend an Eagle Creek Traverse backpack. I've used mine for a while now and it's served me well. The main compartment is nice and roomy and it's also really light. Eagle Creek luggage also meets the standard size requirements for airlines and is really durable so you can use it frequently without having to worry about damaging it.

I still use my old Army Bergen, 100 liters, it can be extended to 120 if I add side pouches, I have actully had over 140 pounds in it and carried it for numerous patrols (when I was serving)

Nothing like that these days, I am pleased to say

I have had it over 30 years, still water tight and I can get all I need in it for any tip

Most people seem to recommend 55 litres, this is what I have anyway.
The brand doesn't matter as long as it has the necessary features and is well made...

Going by the date this was posted (2009)

I would imagine they have been there come back and whatever they did buy is now consigned to the loft by now or resold on ebay

Yeah, i should have looked, but since it was on the first page...
seems most threads here are years old, only a few threads with recent posts

Yup this website is pretty much dead on its feet now, been over taken by FB, which is a shame, its only good for posting blogs now and I dont know how long that will last

I think its just a few diehards who are hanging in here to keep the place alive, still as this website is part of tripadvisor, it might be here for a while yet
