If you had a self-sufficient job where you could work from a laptop and you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Keep in mind that you would be living, working and exploring so not your average backpacking trip.

Somewhere beautiful that can be explored, but not too touristy or busy for the less distractions the better.

Some conveniences would be good, like a local grocer and the like, so not the middle of the jungle!

Give up the goods! If you had the chance to take off for a year (or more) where would you choose?

Is this for you? Do you have that opportunity? Can I come to?

The first two that come to mind are Mae Hong Son and Kuching - or just outside Kuching.

Perhaps I will think of some more later.

Oh - Zanzibar - on the other end of the island from Stone Town.

Hmmm, the Border Ranges on Queensland/New South Wales border.

Ballarat.

Horsham.

Some of the small villages around here (Chiang Rai).

In the park across the road from my place in Bangkok.

Oops - I was supposed to think of them later. I will give someone else a go. See ya

Yeah, it's for me. I will have the opp next year. Sure you can come!

I think we're going to take off for a while next year so I was hoping to get some ideas about where. Thailand is the first place that comes to mind, but I wouldn't mind checking out somewhere new as well! Mae Hong Son, that sounds good!

It would also have to be somewhere that accommodation is fairly inexpensive, where my dollar could be stretched out, so thinking along the lines of a developing country.

Thanks for the suggestions smile.gif

i Know a basic but OK guesthouse in MHS is 150 Baht a night. But renting for longer term - probably 1500 Baht per month for something like a normal one room apartment.

Hmmm, maybe Indonesia also - there would be really nice chilled out places there. But Thailand seems more convenient.

India, Nepal, Sri Lanka????

Oh - in India - up above McLeod Ganj - that'd be a good place to hang out and write for a while also.

So what is the job? What is going on?

Travel writing f/t. Not the dream job kind, but a pretty good one for a Seattle multimedia company, Studio360. It's not the kind of travel writing I'd like to do, it focuses on less-budget/adventure and more popular attraction type things but I just want the experience. So far it's been interesting. I love researching, and I love writing about history especially. I answered you twice, I'm very thorough laugh.gif

The other main thing is, once we're done our home renos, we can take off for awhile and I can still work which has always been appealing to me smile.gif

Yeah, I was thinking about Indonesia. Sri Lanka, that would be great too. Never been but I'd love to go.

Haha! Thanks for the vote of confidence. I'm pretty much working for slave wages! smile.gif Thank god Jeremy (my main man smile.gif) makes decent cash! It's a start though. And hey, you can do it too! You really can. Just keep your eyes and ears open and look often and you never know what will pop up. This is a really great site if you're interested. It does offer alot of pro jobs, but you can find a way in the door too if you keep looking.

I didn't even apply for the job! It was a freak accident of sorts, for real! I applied to do some other p/t work for their site and the editor sent me back an e-mail saying "we have this job available, send some sample work" and she supplied the topics. Weird. Almost kind of meant to be.

Personally, I'd do it anywhere you can comfortably stay for a while, with reliable internet connection and good connections to travel for weekends or a few days at a time. Major hubs are always great. I would probably choose Mexico city first because it has good flights to other cities, is extremely cool, and it'd take a long time to really get to know the city! smile.gif

Though Mexico City sounds cool, I think I'd prefer somewhere quiet with the option to explore the area and then maybe move on to somewhere else. I love big cities but not sure I want to stay in one too long! I'm after somewhere peaceful where we can get to know the locals and just submerge ourselves into local culture for awhile smile.gif We'd have to go somewhere where we can get a decent connection.
