I'm 70 years old but very young minded and have been traveling all by myself in the past. It gets to be lonely, even so I'm a friendly person and make fast contact. This time I would like to use a travel group just don't know which one.

I would like to visit Costa Rica. Last year I went to Greece but it's not so much fun alone.

Thanks for any respond. There are so many website here. I hope, I'll remember which one I wrote a post to. This may also help. I'm from California.

Hi Camryn,

Welcome to the travelpod forums smile.gif I must say, I really enjoyed reading your story, and that you enjoy solo travelling. One of the most inspiring people I met on my travels, was a lady of a similar age to you, who I met in Peru. She'd just come down from Ecuador, and ridden the roof of a train!!

I can't help you specifically with Costa Rica I'm afraid, but there's lots of people on the forums here that will be able to chip in there, but I just wanted to welcome you here smile.gif

Kathryn

My mother and her partner stayed there for a couple weeks. Check out the Peace Lodge in the Punta Islita area, supposed to be amazing!

I forgot to say. . . that takes courage riding on a roof of a train. I've been in Ecuador, Galapagos Islands. Now, I would like to see Costa Rica but a little on the lazy side.

I'm so envious - you've been to the Galapagos islands!! I'd love to go there! Bet it was brilliant! And yes, I agree about the train! I would have done it myself if I'd gone there, as I was so inspired by that lady.

Did you see Wisconsin's recommendation for Costa Rica above as well? Also, you might be good to post a comment in the 'Costa Rica' forum. One of the members "mmbcross" is really knowledgeable on South/Central America too, but maybe he's not noticed your question in this part of the forums. The forums are divided into continent, then country within each, so you may get more feedback in there as this is a 'welcome area' that you posted to originally smile.gif

Hi Camryn,

Welcome to TravelPod! I really like that you solo travel, but I can understand your desire to have someone to go with. As Christopher McCandless wrote in his book Into the Wild: "Happiness is only real if shared."

It is interesting that you mention Costa Rica...have you thought about joining a Service Trip? They're usually group oriented and it would provide you with some instant friends. They also often do home-stays and other "culturally imersive" things.

You might want to check out a few links I found on Google...I'm sure there are many more:

Hello Camlyn,

I'm the mmbcross Kathryn mentioned. I've just been away on holiday and wasn't answering e-mails or post.

I just attended a travel writing course, and the teacher told us the only way to travel is alone. Only then are you encouraged to meet up with other travellers and with local people. On the other hand, I agree that it can be pretty lonely at times. In contrast, our trip to Eastern Europe was with ten family members! Pretty hair-raising at times, believe me.

I'm not one for joining groups. I like the independence. Nevertheless you can travel to your destination and then take local excursions, which are usually cheaper and give you the advantage of meeting other travellers without being tied down to a rigid schedule.

Costa Rica is an easy country to visit alone. At least the language is comprehensible and so many people there speak English. I'm 67 myself, and not really into the young backpacker set, so I may not hang out much where they congregate, but travel is not age sensitive, so no matter where you are, I'm sure you will come across someone with similar interests to yours.

Costa Rica is a fascinating country (though it pales to the attractions of neigbouring Guatemala) and I encourage you to access the country blogs at http://www.travelpod.com/s/costa+rica.

If I were you I would enroll in a Spanish School for a week or so. You will get the chance to see the country, and end up speaking some pretty decent Spanish. Even if you already know some Spanish, it is an unbeatable way to join up with all kinds of people. They even offer stays with families at extremely low prices. You can't beat that for local colour. http://www.studyspanish.com/schools/costarica.htm
