I recieved a travel guide the other day in the mail for Norway, and noticed a region my wife had told me about a while ago: Svalbard. How do you get there from the mainland, and is this a good area for whale watching and polar bear expeditions?

That region sprang to my attention too when I saw a pic of a polar bear! It is really far and expensive to get to. You have to fly from Oslo or Tromso, and it's 1000km from the mainland.
It also looks to be expensive once there....as you're kinda stuck there until your return flight! Norway is expensive as it is, so Svalbard even more so, just for basics like food & accommodation.
They also say that you have to do tours as well as it's dangerous to get around (the ratio of polar bears to humans methinks?) and sole travellers are rare.
You should check timings too - if it's like the rest of Norway, facilities like that are only widely available May to September, when it's 'less cold'
Let me know if you end up going - it looks amazing, and I'd love to see some photos!

You know we just may.....the wife has been dying to see the rest of Scandanavia, and Norway was been the main blip on our radar. SHE actually found Svalbard and showed it to me.....I'm trying to suprise her with an out of this world trip in March, so we'll see.

Yeah, I have a bunch of possibilities for the trip in March, but so far Germany, Norway, and Czech Republic (which we have been to and loved) are top of my list.
