We attempted swimming with Dolphins, but keep in mind there are a lot of things (baby dolphins, weather, etc.) that can keep you out of the water. So we just watched them from the boat as there was a baby in the water. But you did get really close to them.

To get there we drove a rented car for about 3-4 hours.

It was a couple of years ago but I didn't think it cost too much and there was a great hostel (check lonely planet) there that was really reasonable.

If you have the time its worth seeing the Bay of Islands as its one of the prettier ocean spots on the North Island.

Totally agree with scott_and_amy. Get up and see the Bay of Islands. I used to eat breakfast every morning watching the dolphins jumping and splashing about in the bay. It was magic. As for up close and personal, you won't beat Akaroa or Kaikoura in the South Island. Unforgettable..

But be careful if you go there by bus, it is actually quite slow because of the many stops. You can actually visit the large dune up there by special bus, but I think it is better to rent a car for anything else. Scuba diving is also nice up there, but the water is a bit on the cold side ...

'Cold' depends on where you're from and what you're used to.

You can take a tour from the Bay of Islands up to Cape Reinga, the northern-most tip. This includes the dunes, kauri forests and other attractions along the way. Heaps to do around the Bay of Islands area though if you don't make it up that far..

Oh ma godd...i love dolphins!!!i still havnt been to NZ but dude i saw amazing pics of NZ on www.newzealand.com...its like beautiful....

Is it worth it? If you got the time don’t miss it! If you are seeking dolphins and are going
to be moving around New Zealand this is only one of several spots to enjoy......
The Marlborough Sounds at Picton Harbour has resident dolphins to visit, at Kaikoura
there are many, in Akaroa the rare Hector dolphins, Dunedin has quite a lot, down in the
Catlins......................plenty of places to enjoy their company...........

The Bay of Islands actually is better explored by car since in the general vicinity you have
Paihia, Russel ( by ferry), Waitangi, Kerikeri as a group of small town each offering their
own interesting spots and adventures. www.bayofislands.net
The drive there is more tan interesting by getting off the main highway beginning with
Orewa and a fabulous beach, www.orewa-beach.co.nz .
next the Warkworth area where just north of town is the major wine area and in
Matakana one of the country’s top patisserie.

On the side road to Goat Island one of the top dive sports and then circle back to route
one at Wellsford.
North turn to the coast and the fishing village of Mangawhei Heads where the best fish
and chips in the country can be found.....and beautiful coastal scenery.
North to the major city of Whangarei and on to Kawakawa where you can see the
internationally famous public toilets (yes I said toilets!) Once you see them you will know
why.

The Bay of Islands next with all it has to offer and then on north to Ninety Mile Beach,
Cape Reinga, the wild horses of the forest and then back to follow the road to Kaitaia.
The back road then south to cross the ferry at the Hokianga Harbour.....too many people
miss this whole area......then go visit the giant tree of the forest on south to Baylys Beach
and then back to route one where you can stop at the world famous Kauri Museum.

Much more but this is just a brief to show how if you got the time you don’t waste it
staying on the main highway letting someone else dictate your travels...............
