You could give Give 'Ponsonby' a go - loads of trendy bars, cafes and restaurants and still within walking distance to main Queen Street, downtown Auckland..

Mt Eden is twenty mins or so by bus..

Parnell is a really nice area to stay, it's slightly out of the centre but it's really funky with lots of places to eat and drink nearby. We went to the casino several times, I think we used to walk into town and then get the bus back, either way it's not a bad journey and staying in Parnell far outweighed any travel.

Parnell definitely, it's just lovely around there. We used to walk into the centre of Auckland, it was a long walk though, then get the bus back. We needed a place to park a car so we booked a hostel in Parnell and stayed there then when we sold the car we moved to Base backpackers in the centre (which was horrid by the way) but hated it so much we moved straight back to Parnell because it was much, much nicer. Lots of lovely restaurants, shops and places to drink plus a fab curry house.

We stayed at City Garden Lodge which was really nice. http://www.citygardenlodge.co.nz/ the guy that runs it is incredibly friendly and helpful.

Agree with you there Lisa, Base by comparison was almost a living hell. Loved Parnell though, and very similar to Ponsonby. Seems a lifetime ago now..
