Hi- WE have 14 days in Argentina and considered going to Punte del este for the last 4 nights. but getting there seems to be difficult!

we heard there is a ferry that goes to Uruguay then a bus to Punte but then do we need to rent a car??-- Also, what are the ferry times? This is so hard to find online?
We could also fly into to Montevideo but then do we also need to rent a car??

Is it worth it to go-- seems like long trek?
We could just cut it out and do
Buenos Aires
Salta
El Calafate

I just love the beach and wanted some lounging time...thoughts??

A lot depends on what time of year you are going.

The ferry runs constantly throughout the day from Buenos Aires to Colonia. There are connecting buses to Montevideo and Punta del Este (in season). Yes, it's a long way, 5 hours, but if you are going for four days, it's worth it. No need to rent a car.

Colonia is a beautiful little place and you should take time to visit on the way there or back.

We are going mid-Nov and thinking of Punte del Este (Jose Ignacio). Will the weather be okay (still able to layout and lounge by the beach??)
if we don't rent a car in Montevideo- how can we get to our hotel.

Would love your input on our itinerary:
4 nights BA
--Fly to Salta
3 nights Salta
--Fly to El Calafate
2 nights Calafate
--Fly to BA, boat to Colonia, bus to Punte del Este
4 nights Punte
--bus, boat back to BA

fly back to states

An alternative to the beach scene in Punte Del Este is Mar Del Plata, not far south of Buenos Aires. The beaches are huge and the scene is fun. You don't have all the added cost and hassle of the ferry or immigration/customs (the high speed ferry is overpriced and you have to sit inside the whole time. The windows are caked over with saltwater so you can't see anythingon the crossing) to Uruguay. There's also a very cool beach town not far from Mar Del Plata called Pinamar that is very nice to visit too.

El Calafate is very cool. I would highly recommend the glacier hiking tour where you actually get to hike out on the Perito Moreno glacier or the ferry that takes you in front of the glacier.

Hate to say it, but the beach will still be a little chilly in November. The beach season in Argentina and Uruguay starts mid-December. Check the weather regularly. Punta del Este is Maldonado.

The itinerary looks fine. I would try to spend a night on the pampas at an estancia.

I recommend that more time fences to Punta del Este, it is an amazing place where little time will not get to see all...
I lived there and is beautifull.

The best place for go is:

La Barra: "Medialunas Calentitas", a little bar/restaurant where you can eat Hot Croissants (Medialunas Calentitas), THE BEST Hot Croissants IN AMERICA (are Argentine-Uruguayan).
