I believe one can affect the whole. Who can you think of that fits this bill? Do you know of an experience or story that can support this fact?

Definitely Mahatma Gandhi. He's the first of many that come to mind.

He led India to independence, and his philosophy and methods of non-violent confrontation influenced political activists and regular people alike around the world. He was an incredible person and a very fine example of 'One who made a difference'.

His Holiness The 14th Dalai Lama - he has been a wonderful leader and ambassador for his country and he has spread the message of compassion to the many places and people who have received him. Definitely making the world a better place little by little.

Off topic-sorry, but I saw the Dalai Lama speak in Toronto a few years back and I will never forget it. What an incredible human being.

Also Off Topic - I first listened to him in Canberra at a time when I knew almost nothing about him or Tibetan Buddhism. His message was amazing and yet so sensible and clear. Later that night, he came and spoke to me and shook my hand. An incredible amount of love and warmth and compassion emenates from that man. Certainly an experience that changed me and my life.

A dream of mine would be to actually meet him in person & speak to him, if only for a moment. He is sensible and clear. And funny!

In the dance of life, everyone makes a difference. It just depends on how important you view the differences to be.

To localize this a bit...

My freshman year high school English teacher. She pushed me hard and supporting my writing -- bad as it was at age 14 -- like no one else. It's been my goal not to let her down ever since.

His Majesty The King of Thailand every day for the last 60 years has been making a positive difference to this country.

Edward "Weary" Dunlop made a difference to the people imprisoned with him in WW2 and then went on to continue making a difference in Asia afterwards.

Elinor Roosevelt our first woman President of the United States of America. We women know that. She loved a black female opera singer of the time. She could not perform in a command performance for the US President because she was black. Not allowed in the Nation's performance hall. So Elinor called her and requested a private performance and she told a few freinds. The black opera singer performed at the Lincoln Memorial with 70,000 in attendance on the steps. One black woman at top, Elinor on the first step and her friends gathered round the memorial of Lincoln who is said to have fought for ending of slavery. Got to love a rebelious woman. Especially a first lady. Came back to the White House and told Franklin when he asked where she had been "The steps of the Licoln Memorial". Why? "Because I wanted to, don't ask or comment again. Am I clear? Franklin Roosevelt turned to his wife and asked if he needed to address the nation on the behalf of the Presidential Office? "Sure if you want to waist your time, I have poverty to deal with. You speak and I will do. Just as agreed". Franklin Roosevelt then asked Elinor for just one favor. Try not to have him have to call in the armed forces as she battled poverty. She said she would not. He addressed the nation. He also happened to be an advocate for those who needed advocating for.

Well-behaved women rarely make History.

Benigno Ninoy Aquino

He was the voice of the Filipinos vs the dictatorship regimen of Ferdinand Marcos.
His death became the catalyst for the most awesome bloodless revolution in history of the Philippines.

He restored democracy to our country
