Im thinking about booking flights soon for traveling April 2010 and i was going to just buy a one way ticket then buy more while i go.

Someone said this can be really exspensive and im not sure whether i should get an around the world flight.

How exsacly does it work? Is there any extra charges and how do you go about getting flights?

Anyone got a around the world flight before?

Thanks

Luke

I think RTW tickets are good if you know exactly where you want to go, when you want to go, and don't want to do much of overland. You typically buy based on continents and have to book a lot of the itinerary in advance which sometimes doesnt leave room for flexibility, and sometimes they charge pretty big fees for changing them. If you have a pretty straightforward itinerary they seem to be a great deal though, although going overland eats into the miles or segments too, which limits the number of actual flights you have. I did the math from an around the world tickets standpoint, from a supplier like airtreks, and from searching one way tickets on kayak, and found that one way tickets were cheaper for me by like $300. But I am doing a lot of overland and some weird flights that RTW tickets dont let you do [no asia directly to south america for example on a continent pass]. It would be good to research your specific itinerary to know for sure though.

Whats your itinerary?
Depends on the cost of a one way ticket to your first destination & a one way ticket for your return from your last destination.
If you can find a RTW ticket with multiple destinations for the same price as above then go for it.
I got one last year for $1,800 departing Michigan, USA to Thailand, to Indonesia, to Singapore then back to USA.
The round trip ticket from Thailand and back to the USA was the same price so I got the RTW one.
I think the UK has much better prices then the USA because they travel more so it depends.
Have you done any research?

Hi Luke,
For me a Round the World Trip does not mean I get in a plane, travel eastern, spend a day then move forwards, come to Indonisia, then Australia, spend a week or so, from there move west of Australia (which is huge) and then fly to the USA. And then upwards probably, and back to Europe.
I find this ridiculous. It gives you the chance to have a round trip, but for me this is not what I would really want when I have this trip.

Now how I see it.....Well,when the time comes I will get a one way ticket, have ample of time, probably more than a year, and just leave. Move to the east, and without rush, spend at least a month in a place, use both coach and trains, mix with locals, and forget about the coming back. I will see as much as possible then move on to the next, next next, and each time because I will have time, I will look for the cheapest deal as I move on. Even try to work part time while in a place I like.

I will even stay longer, probably 2 years before coming back. For me, just to get in a plane and do a circle is ridiculous......they call it RWTrip but if you see it deeper, you will see that it is just as any other trip we have anywhere.

How much time do you have for this trip anyway? I am interested to know. How much money do you think it will cost you?
Well, as I said, I would buy one ticket, and as I go I will try to find good deals - of course nothing will make me hurry back. This is for me the real RWT.
Don't you agree? Any second thoughts?

I am starting in Thailand and traveling SE asia not sure where to go yet and will be traveling mostly over land. Then to Oz and NZ and stay there for a while. I will be traveling for a year and i plan to have at lease £6000 for that year. My one way flight to Thailand will be £300 and then im not sure bout the flight to Oz when buying it close to the time.

I had orginally planned to just get a one way ticket but she said that if i do that i can end up paying loads for flights when travelling i just need some reassurance that its not gonna cost like £2000 for a flight from South east asia to Oz lol.

When you say you come to Australia which is huge, do you plan to stay long as it is a huge continent, or just visit one two big cities?

I still think that it is better book as you go, so let's see what other members would say.

Once when in Bangkok I asked for tickets for Melbourn or Sydney, but it was really expensive. I did not know of any budget companies then. My husband went twice to Australia and I still did not go even once.! crying_anim.gif

I think it would be cheeper to buy as you go. I thought tickets were cheep from Thailand, Indo & Australia to each other.
Please let us know how this works out for you and what you recommend as I'll be doing it again in a years time form now.

This is tooooo easy..

There's no other way Luke, if you want to be flexible and want to be 'free' then there's no other way. One-way tickets, take them and use them when you need them. Be flexible and do it 'your way'. One-way tickets. Live on them and take each day as it comes.. thumbsup.png And enjoy every single waking moment of course.. thumbsup.png

I plan to stay in Australia for a year. I got family there so they said i can visit them and they will take to to some places. Then i plan to work for a bit to try and help with my funds. Never know i might enjoy it so much that i may take a second years working visa which will require me to do 3 months of Agricultural work.

.. or you can do what so many do and 'get' a report from the farmer to say you've actually 'done' three months of agricultural work wink.gif
