Anyone driven westwards lately from Lahore to Quetta and on to Tarfan? If so what are road conditions like and am I likely to need/be given some sort of escort? Is the route via DG Khan and Lorali advisable or is it better to go south to Sukkur and over the Bolan pass? (I'm in an Aus registered car)

What about the road to Karachi, any issues about driving thru Sindh? The Aus embassy thinks its perhaps not such a good idea but then thousands do it everyday and only a few wind up regretting it.

Hey Intrepidtoo,

In the meantime, if you haven't already read it, check out jennykelly's travelogue. Seems they have gone to many the areas your interests lie. They have provided lots of really great information as well that may answer some of your questions and give you a fairly good idea.

Have to admit, I got really sucked into their trip and am still reading..... smile.gif

Hope that helps a bit. Should help for some of your questions re: Iran as well.

Thanks WD, I had checked this one out, as you say useful stuff and v detailed, but I think the security situation has deteriorated on both sides of the border in recent months/weeks. As we are travelling solo we've whimped out of the baluchistan bit, shipping from Karachi to Turkey and into Iran from the west, that is if we can put the car back together after the Pak customs have dismantled it

You're going to blog it all, correct? Well, when you can get online, or if you can get online. I'm really interested in following along.

I've been on my husband for months and months now about going to the ME. We've had a few ideas on where we'd like to travel to next. Not sure exactly which routes or which countries yet, as there are so many possibilities, but it's a done deal. We're heading off at the end of the year and hope to get 3-6 months off depending. Certainly will get into Iran and check it out. So many possibilites.....

Where can you get info on border conditions? What's happening there now? Ohh, the dismantled car! You'll get through it with, hopefully, little work to get things back together! happy.gif

It'll all be up there in glorious technicolour - there's a link to our blog which is hosted at http://intredpidtoo.blogspot.com with enough photos to occupy a rainy morning in Vancouver (or where ever you hail from). I'll keep you posted re Iran and Turkey. Pakistan, particularly the north is well worth the trip if you get the chance even tho the place seems chaotic from press reports which as we know gloss over the fact that most of the 160million people living there didnt get shot or blown up. The KKH, Skadu and Swat valley are particularly recommended.
Border info can be distilled from a sanitised reading of the various govt travel advisory sites, UK, Aus, Canada etc but also local tourist offices, the Pak PTDC is a good source, as well as other travellers' blogs - also, dare i suggest it, LP's Thorn Tree?

LP Thorntree!!!!!!! OMG!!!! Haha. Kidding. I haven't been there in awhile as I get pretty sick of sifting through the BS, but I suppose it's definitely a good place to sort through and pick up some info. I haven't needed that much info 'til now...

I've bookmarked your site and look really forward to going through it. It's supposed to rain all w/e here (just outside Toronto) so i'll have some time on my hands!

I am particularly interested in Pakistan so thanks for the recommendations. Yeah, I've checked out some gov't travel advisories but wasn't sure how to take them as I've never been to the region. Do you find them, for the most part, way off, or just a little over the top? Or...? I know sometimes things are sensationalised and we all know that things are not always as they are read about.

I've started looking at going into Pakistan and continuing on, possibly in some sort of loop route through the Stans and check our Iran for awhile. Not sure though. There are so many possibilites! It's that fun time of just chucking ideas back and forth and pouring over maps together. Good times! I sense this trip will be fairly monumental for us....

***Uh-oh!!! I can't get your link!!!!! Can you check it for me when you get a chance? Thx!

A loop from Turkey, thru Iran, Pakistan, up the KKH to Kashgar and then through the Stans and round the Caspian would make a great trip and shouldnt be too dificult to arrange I wouldve thought.

As for travel advisories, if we took any notice of them we'd still be home, on the couch, hiding under the douvet with the doors bolted and the bath full of water. It needs tempering with advice from local authorities, eg in Pak the PTDC has motels in some of the more remote locations and offices in the major centres which you can ring for current info, local police etc and of course other travellers and forums. Our experience has been that as long as your not travelling alone, or at night then your pretty much Ok, although I dont think Id wander too far off the beaten track between Bam and Lahore. Our motto has been to trust anyone until they give us cause not to, rather than the other way round.

blog site's up and running - not sure why youre having probs. The link is still OK

Ok! I got a chance to search for your blog and found it. Who knows why but the link just wasn't working for me.

I'm absorbing all details and your info is great! I've scoured over your pictures today and fallen back into the I-need-to-get-out-of-here (!!!) mode again! You two are a real inspiration, I really mean it.

Hope you're both well where ever you both may be right now.

Cheers,
Susie smile.gif

Hi There,

Thanks for your message on travelpod, This is me Karim uddin from Karimabad Hunza valley, working in as tour operator, based in Islamabad, Pakistan.

As your question is concern, i had same trip with a couple from Taftan to Islamabad and till upto Khunjerab Pass. This seems on opposit direction, coz you want to drive from Lahore.

First thing, from Lahore, road conditions is good, but try to drive on day time and some time in the area of enterior punjab they need a special permit and same for sind to Blochitan. but one thing may i recomand you to clear all custom clearnace during your check at Wagha border from India or Khunjrab pass from China. This will help you to save with out any resistance during your travel with in paksitan.

Have a Marvelous Time in Pakistan
