I am planning on driving around Europe with a friend (as far North as the Netherlands, East as Ukraine, South as Greece and West as Portugal..so all over). We have family in Germany and were wondering what the procedure would be for buying a used car and driving it around Europe. How would things like IDP/car insurance work? is this even possible? what else would need to be taken into consideration?

It all depends on how long you want to stay. While its definitely possible, depending on the country where you're buying, it may not be worth the cost. I can't speak for all of Europe but in France, its very easy and affordable to lease a car for the duration of your stay. Its nothing like leasing a car in the States it cost about 200 euros per month.

when you buy a car you need to register it and stuff so you need a permanent address etc...so I'd say you can't...at least in most countries, now if you go to eastern europe i'd say it's possible
