Hi all,

My name is Steve and my wife is a Filipina and our son was born in Vigan but we now live in Bournemouth in the UK.

I need to find some information but sadly when we spoke to some of my wife's family they are not experienced with computers at all, and unfortunatley I could not get the information I needed.

We are hoping to come for a holiday in 3 weeks time and so my urgency is to find out whats available and what I need to get in a short time. I want to set up a PC and Skype so my wife & son can keep in contact with Lolo and Lola. They are located in Pantay Daya.

I googled Vigan and Internet and I emailed Smart but yet again they did not reply :-( Then I tried finding a group who are active using the Internet and saw your website.

I need up to date info on what is available now in Vigan so I know what equipment I should prepare as I am also thinking of installing a HAVA http://bit.ly/QX8yV if the upload speed is great enough so my wife can watch Filipino TV.

Would you please be so kind as to tell me whats the maximum download speed and upload speed available at this moment in Vigan and which company? My wife said she is sure they have rolled out Broadband now and I hope so.

Also would I be able to make it wireless and do they sell wireless routers in Vigan or should I buy one here in the UK and is there a special type I need?

Thank you in advance if you can help me with this information as I am sure you are very conversant with the technology there at the moment and I look forward to your reply.

Yours thankfully

Steve :-)

oops just noticed I missed typed City in the description and put Cict. Sorry

Does this list help? http://pinas.dlsu.edu.ph/tech/isp.html

You should be able to hook up with one of those companies and find out.

I'm sure they have regular high speed internet just like every other place, if you can pay for it of course.

Hi!

Thanks for the quick reply, but unfortunately no. They are more commercial and web hosts.

I'm hoping someone from Vigan City see's this and knows the local ISP's and services.

Get a PLDT DSL connection or Smart broadband provider. Smart broadband (Smart Bro) is under PLDT. But I suggest you ask PLDT (Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company) regarding their DSL products for Vigan. If they can hook up a connection they can also set up the wireless and provide the equipments.

BAYAN TEL is another provider but it is like PLDT monopolizes the country.

If you need an online community specific about this, http://www.pinoydsl.net/, Philippine DSL Network Forum.

Hi,

I know that there are pre-paid portable USB plug it broadband lines in the Philippines like Smartbro or Globe Tatoo...

These are available in many stores and malls in Manila and in Ilocos and would cost just about US$ 25.

Cheers!

I hope I'm not too late with this information...

Tropical Storm Peping (internationally known as Parma) passed by Northern Luzon on the eve of Oct. 3rd and the morn of Oct. 4th. The thing is, a lot of places up there were devastated. As of writing, the province of Pangasinan is said to be under 10 feet deep of water, the mountainous regions around Benguet and the Mountain Province are still clearing landslides. A friend who has relatives in Laoag City, said the damages were extensive. And Vigan is right between Laoag, Pangasinan, Benguet and the Mountain Province.

It would be best for you to contact you wife's relatives in Vigan and get first hand info about the present condition there. Or you can check out the local travel agency you had contact with. Land travel to Vigan would definitely take more than the usual 12 hours, they either have to pass thru Pangasinan or Benguet and I've no information about the status of the airport in Laoag City.

As for your query about internet connections, I was there 2 years ago. While I didn't visit the internet, I did saw a number of internet cafes. So I figure connecting to the internet is not exactly a big problem... but after the storm, it just might be.

Hope these helps.
