16th Annual Fall Family Spectacular, a two-day bash on Friday, Sept. 12 and Saturday, Sept. 13.

The 2008 Festival will once again be held from 6 to 11 p.m. on Friday and from 2 to 11 p.m. on Saturday. The sprawling event will be on Amboy Avenue, from Jackson to Waltuma avenues. The Festival will be an event for the entire family, and will be highlighted by three stages of constant entertainment for both days.

Last year’s Spectacular drew close to 50,000 people and this year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever, with something for everyone. The Fall Family Spectacular will be filled with music, foods of all kind, exhibitors, crafters, children’s rides and professional wrestling.

This year’s closing act on the main stage is a huge draw, The Smithereens. Dressed in leather, brandishing heavy guitars, and an unabashed fetish for British invasion pop, The Smithereens were an anomaly in the American college rock scene of the late ‘80’s. Lead singer/songwriter Pat DiNizio stood out not only with his strange beatnik goatee, but also because his catchy hooks were haunting, not punchy, and because his lyrics were morose. As time wore on, the group became more straightforward, turning into an excellent concert band, one that attacked pop songs with the weight of AC/DC.

A constant throughout the Festival will be food vendors, featuring everything from burgers to seafood to egg rolls to pizza to sausage to fish & chips, the choices of which will be many. The same holds true for the crafters and exhibitors, who will feature a wide cross section that will have everyone’s interest.

Highlighting Amboy Avenue again this year will be the expanded kids’ area of carnival rides and attractions. For a nominal fee, you will be able to choose from a large number of rides and games. Something for the adult set will be the Beer and Wine Garden run by the Edison Italian American Club. Located right to the main stage, it is a great place to relax and listen to some great bands.

Along with The Smithereens, music will definitely set the tone of the event, with a wide range of very popular local and national recording artists appearing on the 2nd, 4th, and 6th Avenue stages.

Opening the 6th Avenue Stage on Friday evening at 7 p.m. is a group from the late 60’s that everyone will remember – The 1910 Fruitgum Company. The group exploded onto the national charts in 1968 with their first single release, “Simon Says”. The song quickly moved up the charts to become a # 2 record on the national charts and reached the top of the charts in the United Kingdom.

At 9 p.m. the very popular Jersey group The Sensational Soul Cruisers take the Main Stage. Back for their 2nd Edison appearance, The Cruisers under the tutelage of Screamin’ Steve Barletta are an 11 man local harmony group with horns.

Saturday brings a variety of styles and sounds to the Main Stage. At 2:15 p.m. early “fest goers’ will be treated to the smooth rock sounds of the Christopher Dean Band. Also, on the Main Stage will be the classic rock sounds of Black Rose.

Edison’s own, The Fins will also surely entertain. The Fins have brought together several particularly rich musical styles to form one powerful, hard driving sound. During their tenure they have been the vanguard of rhythm and blues. The Fins are credited with bringing big band blues to the east coast; and their blend of rhythm and blues, jump, swing, jazz and urban Chicago sound has been exciting audiences wherever they perform.

As if that isn’t enough great sounds for you, check out the best area groups around on the 4th Avenue Family Stage, as they keep the joint jumping all night Friday and all day Saturday. The Robert Murdock Band headlines Friday night while The VooDudes and 52nd Street, a Billy Joel tribute band show off on Saturday.

In between those bands on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. on 4th Avenue be prepared to hold your ears as the younger set willl scream their lungs out for the Hannah Montana Tribute Show.

The Local Stage will offer continuous entertainment throughout the day with karate, dance, children’s entertainment and up and coming local bands. Back for a 6th straight year, the Edison High School Cheerleaders and the Edison Jets Pop Warner Cheerleaders will surely energize the wrestling area before the 4:00 p.m. wrestling show on Saturday.

Speaking of wrestling, the National Wrestling Superstars are coming back to the Festival for both days bringing 8 bouts including former WWE Hall of Fame Champion, Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, and the Iron Sheik. Get there early on Friday for the 7:30 p.m. start. Saturday’s action will take place in the afternoon and evening. There will be a photo/autograph session following the bouts. Also, on the two day card will be WWE standouts Sal Sincere and the Famous TV Clown.

Our 8th Annual Car & Bike Show, sponsored by Aggressive Automotive and Performance of Amboy Avenue, Edison, will be another area of interest to thrill fest goers on Saturday.

Add this to a kid’s area offering Pony Rides, Face Painting, and a Petting Zoo, and the whole family will be kept busy.

Free admission, free parking and lots of family fun. Come to Edison and be a part of it! Limited space is still available to food and craft vendors, as well as exhibitors. For more information, contact the Recreation Office daily at 732-248-7312.
