Some people are going around begging people to show them their city, rather than just visiting sites, they are asking people to help them "live" their city.

Check out the blog: http://www.experienceless.org/wordpress/

There's a cute video on there.

I was a bit too lazy to read the entire blog, but I get the general idea of the site through the nice video.

It is something I have to definitely agree with. Sure going to new cities is nice to enjoy the sights and museums and what not, however to truly "experience" a place I feel that you need to be with a local who can show you "local" life.

In fact, my greatest experiences abroad have been due to meeting a random local in a pub, bus, or concerts.

Totally agree with durnadupa. I'm always looking to meet people that know about the area I'm visiting. Its the best way to learn what it's really like and make great friends while having a much better time then the tourist.
Be a traveler not a tourist.

I find the idea great for young ages.
I cannot imagine me for instance, sitting on a pavement in a foreign country waiting for sb to come and show me around. hyper.gif crying_anim02.gif

Yes, I strongly believe that it is a good idea but for youngsters.....

Somehow some form of immersion is needed in order to get a true feel of a place. Spending time with locals and not tourist guides would give a traveler more ideas as to how people live there, sometimes the traveler can even do the actual things like weave, dance, cook.

I remember this comment made by the last group who went with us down south of the Philippines (Mindanao), they said that they never imagined how cool it is to learn the ways of a tribe we visited. They were so thrilled to know that these were the ancient Filipinos (people living in the Philippines) who still maintained the way they live up to now.
