Malaysia is again in the headlines. 2 months ago an Islamic court sentenced a woman to the cane for drinking beer in public and for an Indonesian muslim man for drinking in a restaurant too. This week the Shariah High Court has sentenced an unmarried couple for having sex in a car outside of an office block (although they were in their underclothes and not actually engaging in sex).

Caning for sex in car

Do you think this is a setback to Malaysia's moderate muslim state reputation?

I live in Dubai and it is quiet harsh regarding the no-martial sex (remember the infamous Sex on the Beach scandal), but as for drinking, I now of plenty of muslims that drink here, but there are certain clubs that won't allow locals (dressed in local gear) enter their premises (which I don't agree with), but because they serve alchohol it is deemed un-muslim.

I actually am not aware of any muslims being arrested for drinking here in Dubai and not aware of what the punishment would be, although I assume it would be gaol and deportation (if not local)....
