I got an email from a member asking for suggestions on hostels, and since I had to dig out all the information from my files, I thought I'd share it here. Maybe it can help someone else. I have personally stayed at all of the hostels listed, with the exception of the Guilin one, but I did visit it. These are great hostels with great staff. I hope this helps.

Beijing:

For Beijing I would highly recommend you use this hostel. It is better than any hotel you could find. It is in an ancient courtyard home and is beautifully restored and clean. The staff is fantastic and it is just a ten minute walk to Tiananmen Square. It’s close to banks, supermarkets, and sites.

Shanghai
There is a fantastic hostel located right next to the main downtown shopping area, yet far enough away to be away from the crowds.

Xian

Guilin
Guilin is my hometown, so I never used a hostel here, so I went and checked out all of the hostels in Guilin. This one is the best. It is simple, but it is clean and it located right off the main shopping street and near many sites. The staff is good and can speak English.

Lijiang
This hotel is located right in the middle of the Lijiang Ancient Town and is built in the traditional Naxi Dongba Ethnic Minority architectural style. It is a wonderful place. It is very clean and the staff is wonderful. It is a really nice place.

Lhasa
In Lhasa I would not recommend staying in a hostel. They are not too nice. The Tibet Hotel is a four star hotel and is nice. A four star hotel in Lhasa is more like a 3 or 2 star hotel in the west though. It is clean and the desk staff and concierge can speak English.

Tibet Hotel
No.64 Beijing Middle Road, Lhasa 850001, Lhasa, China

Hong Kong
This is one of my favorite hostels in China. It is located on Hong Kong Island. It is located on the top of a mountain and offers spectacular views of Hong Kong. The staff is fantastic and it is clean and very comfortable. It is located quite a way from any downtown area, but it has a free shuttle which runs every hour, so is quite convenient. It is in a very quite location and is very peaceful and a nice rest from the bustle of the city.
