This looks SO fun!!! I'm reminded of it every year and every year I think to myself " I HAVE to experience this some day!" It just passed by August 26th. It was for the 64th time!

Has anyone gone to Tomatina Festival in Bunol?

I went to La Tomatina a few summers ago - it's even more incredible than you can imagine! Here's a blog entry I did about it: http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog-entri...40340/tpod.html

I brought an underwater disposable one, and you can also buy them at the festival from a local. Some people stick their camera in a clear plastic bag, but I don't think you'd get good pictures that way, and at the fight, a camera is like a bulls eye - everybody will go after you. It's one of those events where you should focus on enjoying the moment, rather than capturing the moment. Really, the camera was only good for the before and after photos. Photos of the fight itself would probably only look like a giant red smudge.

These many tomatoes! It really is amusing to be part of it, but doesn't it hurt being hurled tomatoes at?

sometimes it does not pay to whip your camera out. After awhile, I slip into that mode, capturing less images (on camera) but more memories. Using a camera definitely takes away from the truly savouring the moment.

Yes it does! You're supposed to crush the tomatoes before throwing them, but nobody does. And some are unripe, and can't really be crushed. Just wear goggles to protect your eyes, the pain only lasts a second, and you don't feel much with the adrenaline rush.

What really hurts are the soaked, and twisted up t-shirts that people throw around.

but isnt anyone disturbed by the amount of waste ?? i mean when you think about people who are starving in this world and struggle to put food on the table how can one find such a festival "enjoyable".........

...true, but if you think about the money spent on worldwide new years eve celebrations (for example), that could be donated to worthy causes instead - but it's not gonna happen is it?

I don't know, I suppose they really over-index in tomatoes in Spain which might be why they do it...maybe it's 'end of season' tomatoes that don't taste good?...or maybe they scoop up the streets afterwards to make salsa?

(I can see your point btw....but I still want to go)

Talking about it as a waste, I guess there really are seasons in life and each of them has meanings and importance. It's not like it's evil to be having fun while others are in need... What I just want to say perhaps is that it's ok to go through hardships because we grow strong out of them and then we appreciate the bounty more because of that.

So going back on the tomatoes... there are really are lots of weird festivals. In my country, one festival we have is the San Juan feast where water is sprinkled on every one in tribute to St. John the Baptist. It's not very nice to those who are on their way to the office because they may get wet. Heheheh! dance.gif

People have been drinking and get a little crazy, so they rip the shirts off each other, twirl them up, and throw them into the crowd. A tip - if you're training in from Valencia or a nearby town for the tomato fight, you need to have a shirt to get back on the train. So if yours gets ripped off, make sure you get another one from the trip back.
