We're arriving in NZ on 30th Sept and departing on 24th Nov. What's the weather going to be like? I know that's like asking the length of a piece of string but we're coming from the US where it's been really warm, so don't really have any winter clothes as such. We're arriving in Christchurch. Will it be really cold?

Also, is there a Walmart type supermarket place that sells clothes?

If this question has already been asked then feel free to direct me to the post smile.gif or just tell me of for not looking first! smile.gif

Christchurch is a pretty big city, approx 300,000. You can buy anything you need there.

I spent a few weeks on the south island in November 2001. Weather is unpredictable. When we were at Fox Glacier they had to cancel our walk onto the glacier because of the heavy rains. It didn't let up for two days, and we were confined to the backpackers.

However, by the time we reached Milford Sound, the area with the highest rainfall in New Zealand, it was clear blue skies and 28 degree C temperatures.

Christchurch experiences similar weather to Tasmania. In October the daytime temperatures will be approx 12-20 degrees C.

Lisa,

Don't worry about the weather. It'll be getting warmer by the time you get here. Sure, it's always unpredictable but you'll find everything you need in Christchurch. And yes, the store you're looking for is 'The Warehouse' which sells everything you could possibly need.

Plus, when you get here, the last thing you'll be worrying about is the weather. Trust me. Like Will, I did the Milford Sound on a glorious day. Last year I kayaked the Doubtful Sound over three days and the weather was stunning then too. But hopefully it WILL rain when you're in the Fiordland as that's when it's at its most spectacular!

The weather will change alot while you are there but remember that you can always go to a second hand or thrift store to buy clothes if you are completely unprepared...then you can leave them behind or donate them to another traveler smile.gif Many hostels I went to had clothes recycling boxes where you could take or leave things.

Have fun!

You're absolutely right Lee. Once here, it will hardly be an issue, and will swiftly find itself in the back of your mind. If it does become an issue, there'll be plenty of quick-fix solutions at hand. No worries! thumbsup.png

Well, it's a lot warmer than I expected. Which is a bonus but we've still got to go a bit further South than Christchurch so I'm glad I bought my jacket. Still at least it's getting warmer, Although I saw a 0c predicted for Thursday night here -eek!! smile.gif
