Has anybody had major surgery and then travelled straight away? How far did you travel? How did you go? Any problems?

I have just had a major double surgery (2 in 2 days) and I was orginally planning to travel in the next 2 weeks....but I am now thinking I am not well enough....(originally I was only having the one surgery but I had massive complications).

Thoughts?

Thanks Kathryn. Everyday I feel a little better. My main concern is 1) I am on a special liquid diet (which does not involve alcohol hyper.gif ) and 2) picking up and carrying heavy luggage.

Well point one is just mean! Evil doctors!

For point 2 then, what about a wheely case? And maybe they could help you at the airports if you asked in advance?

I think the most important this of all is how do you feel? If your health overcomes the joy of a well earned holiday, then you should probably stay at home. Nevertheless I tend to think that it would be the reverse, and that a nice holiday will do you a world of good, as long as you don't stress yourself out. I can't comment on the liquid diet bit, but Kathryn is right regarding help. Request a wheelchair from the airlines. Whenever you need help, look around you. You will find it amazing how many people will be only too happy to help. It's just that no one ever asks. And a good suggestion at all times....travel light.

Hopefully you are not going to the Amazon jungle or the North Pole.

I am not bouncing back as quick as I was hoping (i think it was the surprise second surgery!). I am seeing the specialist tomorrow and I will ask him his thoughts, but I know in my heart what he is going to say. To be honest I think I really should stay put for a bit and recover and heal first before I head off travelling again (regardless where I go). I just over being grounded for one thing or another! I need to learn to have some down time when I really need it.

Hi, Rani! Poor you, but I'm glad to hear you're okay and on the mend.

I had a major surgery in January and traveled 10 days later. I actually recovered in about half the time the doctor expected, even going back to work 3 weeks early. I am 100% convinced it was because I was up and active, within the boundaries of my healing of course, from the hour I was back into my hospital room after surgery and thereafter. I am not suggesting that you do anything resticted, but don't be afraid to push yourself in a safe way. Your body will tell you when it has had enough. Like Martin said, don't be afraid to ask for help. Most people are more more than happy to lend a hand. And, most importantly, rest as necessary.

Take care! beach.gif

Wow you did bounce back fast, that is great ...I was up and about after the 2nd surgery within 2 hours and was OK, just slow. Now, a month later, I have only just been able to start doing some exercise and lifting light loads....still no lifting heavy stuff! It is taking a little longer than I expected and glad that I didn't decide to go travelling immediately!
