Hi all,
Next week on Thursday the 27th August, I will be leaving Utila on the morning boat and getting to La Ceiba around 8:30 am. Then making my way up to San Pedro Sula. Now I need to get to Puerto Barrios well before 2:00pm for the boat to Belize, on Friday the 28th August.
I've been reading a few posts and most of the info shows that their are buses etc that leave from Copan to Puerto Barrios. I have already done the ruins and so have no real interest on going back there. The other option being to go to Guatemala City, but that also takes up more time and I have no desire to return to there either. So does anyone know of a direct bus, times and price.
Many thanks for reading

You had best take the direct route via Corinto to Puerto Barrios. It's a bit convoluted, but if you leave early (7:00 am) from San Pedro Sula, you should make Puerto Barrios by noon.
First take a minibus to Puerto Cortes, which run every 15 minutes (30 mins). From there, another minibus will take you to the Honduran border post at Corinto (about 3 hours), which leaves regurlaly every hour, or when all the seats are taken. There is a 17 kilometre stretch from the Honduran border post to the Guatemalan side which is also covered by regular minibuses constantly. Once in Guatemala there are minibuses that run every half hour that take you directly to Puerto Barrios (1 hour). It sounds horrifying, but in fact it is all done pretty seamlessly, and the distances are not great meaning the fares are inexpensive and the travelling time considerably less that going via Copan. Can I guarantee that you will arrive in time for the ferry? No, because this is Central America, and anything can happen. Nevertheless if all goes as planned, you should make the ferry easily.
As a matter of fact, I know of no direct bus service from Copan to Pto. Barrios. You would have to go from San Pedro Sula to Copan, then Copan to Rio Hondo on the Guatemalan Atlantic Highway, and from there to Puerto Barrios. This route is considerably longer and will certainly take you all day.
Alternative? Travel from La Ceiba all the way to Puerto Barrios on Thursday. You'll miss nothing by zipping through San Pedro Sula. Then you can lie in on Friday, and still be one of the first on the ferry.

Hi Mmbcross,
Many thanks for the info. Just a few quick questions:
1) Are there no buses from SPS to Corinto or must you go via Puerto Cortes 2) Provided there are no drama´s/problems is it possible to get from la ceiba to puerto barrios in 1 day.
Thanks for helping.

Hello guys, I know my post is 4 months late, but just for the record and for helping other travelers I update the info for buses transportation between Honduras-Guatemala and v.v. ... there is a direct bus-pullman service between San Pedro Sula, Honduras - Guatemala City and vice versa. Fuentes del Norte (bus company) tel in GUA: +(502) 2238-3894 - The bus terminal in GUA is at 17 calle 8-46, zona 1. It departs Guatemala city at 6 am (be there 1 hour earlier), stops in Morales for diesel, rest and food, and arrives to SPS around 2pm. This trip is via Entre Rios, Izabal (GUA) - Corinto (HON). It departs from SPS at 6am to GUA, arrives also at 2pm (depends on Guatemala traffic, which is terrible). I dont know more SPS info, I'll be traveling next thursday, when back, I'll update again. GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY YOUR TRIP.

My boyfriend and I will go to Central America in May. It is a raining season but I hope it will not stop us to enjoy our trip. I am from Guatemala that is why I am a little bit concern about how safe could be our trip. If somebody can tell me recently if going to Honduras vía Puerto Barrios is safe, i will appreciate it. The last time I went to Central America was 6 years ago. And most of my friends in Guatemala don't travel like backpackers. Thanks for any information that you can share.

Hello novalitza, I am also fm Guatemala and I´ve done this route 5 times so far this year and I can tell you: The Guate-Hond highway by bus via Pto Barrios IS SAFE (use Fuente del Norte).
I tell you that you dont have to go all the way to Pto Barrios to get to Honduras border... 60 miles before Pto Barrios there is a big sign on the highway that shows you the turn for the Hond border (this place is Entre Rios, 40mins-1hr after Morales, Izabal).
I will be more concerned for the passports than for other issue on the highway; this is because the "border police" of both countries are looking for opportunities to get "mordidas" or money. If you are guatemalan, dont use your passport (specially if you´ve been out of Guatemala for more than 90 days), use your "cedula" if you have it off course. With the american passport of your b-friend... no problem.
Good luck, enjoy. moy180

I have been living and working in Livingston, on the Rio Dulce for just over 2 months now and have made several trips into Honduras from Puerto Barrios without any problems. Both by private vehicle and by bus. The only concern I would keep in mind is the time of day you arrive at the border as it closes at 6pm. Even though you can still walk across after that, immigration will no longer be open so you may run into some problems with that.

Hello Novalitza, I have read all these previous posts and last year mmbcross said there was no direct bus route from SPS to the GUA border without going thru Pto Cortez. He also said things can change quickly. When you went to Pto Barrios from SPS by bus' did you have to go thru pto Cortez b4 getting to Corinto? A friend of mine says you do not have to go thru pto Cortez, but at the same time she has never ridden the bus and the people who are telling her, also have not ridden the bus. Thanks.

Hello, I am so sorry but I can not help you this time. We changed plans in the last minute because we wanted to stay longer in Guatemala. When I was in Livingston I saw in the tour agencies tour from Guatemala to San Pedro Sula. What I know for sure is that you can take a bus from Morales to San Pedro Sula. It arrives at 2.00 pm with Fuentes del Norte. Wish you the best!
