From Reuters:

There is a hotel in San Diego offering deep discounts if you bring your own bed, sheets, lights and more...

I'm thinking why even bother with the hotel? Just go camping!

Bring your own bed? They must be joking.

Nevertheless if Mary and Joseph, who I think carried their bed with them, had found this place it would certainly have been more comfortable than the dump they landed up in. Perhaps all of history would have been different, as the security guard would not have let in the shepherds with their sheep and the three wise men without a pass.

I don't mind bring along the bed, lamps and all, but I draw the line on having to bring my own toilet paper.....that's just being too cheap.

QUOTE
I draw the line on having to bring my own toilet paper.
Back in the 60's when the new Jorge Chavez airport was opened in Lima, the toilets in the outside concourses always lacked toilet paper. Toilet paper was still a bit of a luxury back then, so Limeņos could not resist taking the gleaming new roll of paper home with them, or even on the flight with them, just in case. Even today you will rarely meet a Peruvian who doesn't have a small wad of toilet paper stashed away somewhere on his person, just in case.

In the end, the authorities had to station an attendant at each location. You paid S/. 1.00, and in return you received a few sheets of paper. Gentlemen doing No. 1 were exonerated from the charge.

So if your are travelling somewhere in the world, and you find yourself in a toilet without paper, look for a kind Peruvian, who will surely help you out.

You mean it is something common carrying toilet paper with Peruvians! lol.
You reminded me of my self here.
The funny thing is on this trip, I was carrying toilet paper on me also, as my eyes were watering from an alergy, and I kept forgetting to buy tissue papers.

Me too. It was a staple in my bag.

I think the idea isn't that bad really. It's a great deal! It would just be a pain to carry a blow-up mattress and all that other gear.
Maybe camping outside is a turn off but camping inside isn't that bad for some people......? It's like a sleepover smile.gif Some people just hate camping!

For me, this is the first time I have ever heard of inside camping. Are there alot of places out there that do this?

Wow very interesting. I'm not sure how many people would use this option. At first I thought it would be for anyone who lost their house and didn't want to stay in a homeless shelter but couldn't afford a normal hotel. But after thinking about it, insurance pays for the hotel and whats the chances your house burns down but you still have a bed.
I would take the room if I couldn't find a hostel to stay in & the weather was not conducive to camping.

Well I guess it eliminates the weather aspect.. And the wildlife.. Maybe some people consider it a safer alternative to camping? tongue.gif

Plus it cuts out alot of the 'work' and roughing it that camping brings (not that I mind b/c I love camping!). You can get out of your tent and shower, head to a cafe for food, take a dip in the pool, go shopping......way more available than if you're in the bush somewhere. I think that's what appeals to some people...? The only 'roughing it" part would be sleeping in the tent.

It's not really camping if you take the wildlife out of the piucture. Half the fun of roughing it, at least in these parts, is never knowing if a black bear is going to come snooping through the sites.

I would personally completely agree with that. Sleeping in a tent is not camping! The entire experience is.

Yes I did forget. But your question reminded me so I just called them.

Corporate Director of Marketing at JC Resorts & Rancho Bernardo Inn is Melinda Speck. She will have all the answers about why. But what I understand from the man I talked to was, its just a simple way to get more customers to use their hotel in this low economic time.
It seams to be working too, because their website showed the $19 room fully booked.
You can check this link for Melinda Speck's details.

Nice followup.....so I would suspect we will be seeing more of this, because once someone stumbles onto something that works, everyone jumps on board.
