And if you come to Lahore in the spring, two interesting things : a.The annual Horse and Cattle Show in March at the Fortress Stadium if you want to see dancing cattle and horses. b.The annual kite flying festival of "Basant" when the whole city goes crazy looting kites.
These days,in the culturally barren land of Islamabad,a great deal of song and dance is going on.The annual "Lok Mela" or folk festival at the "Lok Virsa" Museum in Islamabad.Traditional costumes, food, handicraft and music from all four provinces which are all linguistically and ethnically diverse. The festival is rowdy, but at least something is happening in this sleepy town.
Pakistan is a "dry" place. In the late 70s,a kind of religious revolution took place.Horse racing, casinos and alcohol were all banned although all these things were very much allowed prior to that.Too much relgious zealotry here.

Not having alcohol and casions is good as far as I am concerned. The real problem is a general sense of suffocation. It has to do with not having enough opportunities to have fun.

Hey there ... nice starter kit for Pakistan ... you are right - it is a great place with a lot of color - and many friendly people. It can be intimidating for foreigners, especially women. One must be mindful of their surroundings. One comment I'd like to make is .... why didn't you add Islamabad/Rawalpindi in here? I know Lahore is "where its at" but ... come on! The moutainous region north of Islamabad is wonderful. Town called Murree is noteworthy ...

I visited Pakistan in June 1979 and Dec 1980, Lahore then mostly the Northwest Province and Northern Territory; Gilgit, Hunza, Skardu, Chitral and Kalash tribes.
The scenery is magnificent and the people very friendly. Food good. In Gilgit I stayed at a budget Tourist Cottage run by Abdul Karim. Not just a good businessman and fine host but a man of integrity and generosity.
We stayed in touch by snail mail for a number of years before losing contact. Recently tracking down some leads of Gilgit residents who had posted in Travel Pod I again establihed contact with Mr Karim. And we exchanged a number of e mails.
He now runs a Tourist Service:

It is a great Web sight with photos of the magnificent mountain scenery. I can recommend him without reservation.
I get no commission from him nor seek any favors. I post this merely out of friendship and respect.
My friend is planning to go to Pakistan and he is thinking about taking up a job there in medical department either hospital or pharmacy. It will be the first time that he’ll be going to Pakistan despite being a Pakistanis and he really don’t know anything about Northern Areas, the region he’ll be staying. He will need a pharmacy directory for that part of Pakistan please. He got one on http://www.drugdelivery.ca/xx-PK-07-A-xx/N...s-Pharmacy.aspx but he can’t understand why he doesn’t have the pharmacies name. He has already got one for Hospitals, but still searching for a pharmacy directory…
Just came from Pakistan and wanted to relate new info to you. As of this fall, you can get a visa at the Sost border station if coming from China and the Khunjerab Pass (for most US-Japan-Euro--check to verify your nationality can do this). The visa is valid for one month.
Thanks for the info Lloyd. We've been seeing plenty of Pakistan in the news. How were things for you? I'm still under the belief that traveling there is still safe though many seem to think otherwise. Can you shed some light on the topic? Thanks.
