Hi,

I´m currently in Cusco and will likely leave on an overnight bus to Le Paz landing midday on the 19th August 2009. I have a flight on the 30th back to Lima leaving from ( I forget the name but the airport which is in Peru, a 6 hour coach ride from Le Paz. My flight is at 830am. Therefore I have to leave Le Paz on the 29th dependent on whether or not I vist Lake Titicaca on way back from or to Le Paz.

The things I dont want to miss are Death Road - have just read a blog and have been advised to not get bus back up the hill and go on to Rurrenbaque where I will take a plane. I kind of know the first bit, but a bit loose on the organisation of the second half.

19th - 20th land in Le Paz sighsee and check out nightlife
21st - Death Road, then on to Rurrenbaque. How long do we need here?
from 24th-29th I´d like to fit in Salt flats and Potosi AND get back to Le Paz. Oh and there is Puno, Lake Titicaca to consider as well.

Is this all possible in the time frame I have. Appreciate any tips and open to newe ideas.

Thanks
Dan

Hi, The key thing to remember is that bus travel in Bolivia is quite slow and prone to road blocks etc, so you can't rely on it too much. Therefore, I think you need to prioritise what you want to see and do and concentrate on them and if you get to fit in other things it will be an advantage. I put your start and end points in the timeframe below, and worked around these (realistically!)

19th August = arrive midday in La Paz, sightsee in the daytime, book Death Rd & Rurrenabaque, nightlife in the evening

20th August = Death Road bike ride - they leave at 7am and last most of the day, so be careful with how much you enjoy the La Paz nightlife the night before!

I didn't go to Rurrenabaque, but having looked into it, it seems it's a 14 hour bus journey from Coroico (where the Death Rd journey ends). I know some people who did this and they were gone a couple of days, so I'd advise allowing for that. The flights also only seem to run on certain days, so if you're really wanting to do this, you'll have to find this all out in La Paz on the 19th. I also read that the flights are often cancelled in the rainy season.

Based on that info, I'd say you'd be looking at arriving in Rurrenabaque on the morning of 21st August (if there is a bus leaving Coroico on the afternoon of the 20th, and if it's not cancelled) A couple of days jungle trekking means you'd be leaving around 24th August to fly back to La Paz (if the plane is running that day, and if it's not cancelled)

24th August = if all the above goes to plan, and you are in La Paz on the 24th, then you could get a flight to Uyuni (via Sucre). Say you arrive in Uyuni on the 24/25th, you'll need to get on a salt flat tour that starts and ends in Uyuni. This will take 3 days, and you'll have to be back in Uyuni on the 28th August. It's 5 hours by bus to Potosi, so at a push you might be able to squeeze it in, but in reality I think you'll be getting another flight and having another night in La Paz.

29th August = need to be in La Paz, and en-route to airport.

30th August = flight at 8:30am back to Lima - I don't know what airport you mean, but given my experience of buses in Bolicia and Peru, don't rely on 6 hours - aim to be there on the 29th, the 30th doesn't count given the time of your flight.

I haven't included everything in your list, because I even have concerns about the times suggested above, just because of the time it takes to get around and the unreliability factor.

If Lake Titicaca is high on your list of things to do, then you'll have to cut out Rurrenabaque or the salt flats. Both these trips are a couple of days long, so if you cut out one, then you should have time to do everything else and enjoy more of the La Paz nightlife if that's what you want.

You CAN do the Salt Flats on a day trip from Uyuni. It departs at 10:30 and returns at 18:00. This might allow you to get back to La Paz and get to Copacabana on the shores of Lake Titicaca and nearby Isla del Sol. Don't miss Lake Titicaca, it's a unique destination. Forget Puno, you'll never fit that in unless you overnight there on the way between Cusco and La Paz.

Uyuni Salt Flats in one day? Well, you can do Grand Canyon in a day trip from Las Vegas. I guess if that's all the time you have its better to see a little of it than none at all.

Thanks for the tips. Being ill has meant I arrive into La Paz tomorrow midday. Would like to have 2 nights in La Paz. Not sure about the bike ride..sounds too damn dangerous after reading an article about the French girl that was killed. That means leaving La Paz on the 23rd. Too where is the question. My flight to Lima is out of Juliaca at 8:30am on Sunday 30th. Juliaca is a 40 min drive from Puno so I have to get there ( to Puno ) at the latest 6am on the 30th.

Think I have trip sussed - I think Rurrenbaque is prob a no given the time span so willhead to Uyuni getting there on Monday if I get overnight bus. Then on to Potosi and possibly Sucre.

Where I do need some direction is on where to go and stay for Lake Titicaca if I get to Copacabana on the morning of the 29th.

Thanks
Dan

This place certainly seems the most recommended in Copacabana:
http://www.travelpod.com/hotel/Hotel_Rosar...Copacabana.html, but it's quite pricey, about US$ 60.00 a night.
Here are some more more recommendations

I have just realised that if you are due to leave Juliaca at 8:30 am on Sunday 30th, you will be hard pressed to get from Copacabana if you stay the night of the 29th.

I suggest you stop at Copacabana for a day visit, then take a later bus to Puno, or better still, on to Juliaca. Juliaca is not at all interesting, just a way station, but if your flight leaves at 8:30, it's better to be as close to the airport as possible.

Jungle Tour of Machu Picchu? Never heard of that one.

I've never done Rurrenbaque, so can't help much there. Hopefully Kathryn has some advice. Everyone in the travel blog mentions the "3 day pampas tour", but no one gives a name. At least everyone seemed quite happy with the arrangements, so that's a plus.

Your Titicaca schedule looks good.

Sorry, I didn't do Rurrenabaque, so can't help you there. I'm sure if you ask folk in the La Paz hostels you'll hear of a good company to go with - that's how I chose my Death Road bike ride company - Downhill Madness - the girl who recommended it was still alive, so I figured it was a good one (Actually it was because of the top notch bikes and head protection really - her being still alive was only one factor, lol) Other travellers will be honest with you about their Rurrenabaque experiences, I'm sure you'll get a good one.

Sorry to hear about the Macchu Picchu trip - I've never heard of a jungle tour either...?
