Aloha from Kauai...just a quick post to remind guests visiting our tiny lush island this holiday vacation to please retain your sense of responsibility as you would do at home...often, as i guide first time visitors on their trip of a life time, or a family on their yearly reunion, a kind of lack luster awareness to the immediate surroundings can lead to peril. Recently on a hike down the Na Pali trail to the first beach Hanakapia'i, i noticed a group entering the water even as a huge shore break set of waves was exploding literally feet away from them. Took a few seconds to get to them to nicely remind them that this beach has a sad reputation of claiming lives. I've heard the same reassurances from a thousand guests throughout my life... Being a "good" swimmer or "living by a lake" does not compare to the rugged dynamics found on a daily basis on our island shores. Most guide books gloss over the hazards and their one dimensional awareness doesn't translate to the ever changing potentials of getting hurt. Too many time as a fire fighter/EMT here, i have had to retrieve someones deceased loved one from the ocean or carry a seriously injured person out of a precarious predicament...we are gracious and caring of all the visitors to our home and are ever vigilant in keeping them all safe. awareness is key as is the openness to always know that those of us born and raised here and who work within the hospitality world, want you to savor your adventures and return home safely to share those wonderful moments. A little sunburn,a few coral cuts or a minor head ache from those pre flight mai tais should be the extent of your trauma... a hui ho
