Wow... Martin (mmbcross) knows a lot about most of these places. He should pipe up soon.

In the meantime, have you looked through some of the blogs yet? Just type in the city in the search box and see what other people have done before you.

Goodness...that's an impressive itinerary, and pretty eclectic too. Are you surfers?

San Juan del Sur: Nice beaches, surfing, inexpensive
Punta Areanas, Costa Rica: Miserable place. Don't waste your time.
Manta, Ecuador:Nice beaches. Nearest beach to Quito. Are you surfers?
If you are surfers, you can't miss the endless pipelines in the Chicama Valley near Trujillo.
Lima...That's easy to get info on
Pisco: There was a very serious earthquake last year in August. It probably hasn't recovered completely yet.
La Serena: Nice beach resort between the Atacama Desert and the lush central valley.
Valpo: Amazing city usually missed by tourists. Set on steep cliffs around the bay and next to beautiful Viņa del Mar.
Pucon: Now you are in the gorgeous southern Andes of Chile. Stunning scenery and lots of adventure travel.
Colchagua Valley: Cheers! Lots of wine, women and song!
Arica: Driest place on earth. No rainfall ever recorded.
Lake Titicaca: More scenic on the Bolivian side. Puno is a miserable place, unless you overnight on the Uros floating Islands.
Machu Picchu: No comment

Indeed as Starlagurl recommends, enter the home page of Travelpod and just type in the name of the place you will be visiting in the search box. Beware some may need a little tweaking. Punta Areas will most likely bring up Punta Arenas, Chile. Manta will tell you all about manta rays. See example below...........

Good luck, and if you need more specific info, don't hesitate to call!

Thanks for the info! Can you recommend places to stay in Valpo and Santiago as well as Lima?

I haven't any personal recommendations, but I know our Travelpod and Trip Advisor travellers have plenty to say on the subject. Skim theses posts for tons of advice:

If you are looking for down-to-earth accommodations, look to Valparaiso, a rough but colourful port city. If you would prefer something a little more up-market, look to Viņa del Mar next door, one of the finest seaside resorts in South America.
