Where is the most dangerous place you've ever been?

Or alternatively... where were you when you were the most scared you've ever been in your life?

I WAS IN CYPRUS AT LEFKARA. A very beautiful village, and I left the cottage our family has there for my usual walk. My sister gave me instructions and suggested that because it was hot to leave at 5.00, not earlier. I had never tried walking in that area before, so I did not know the way very well.
The place where the house is situated is outside the village in the fields. All roads look exactly the same, but I could not imagine that I could have been lost there.

I walked for 4 or 5 kms and I started walking back. On the way I saw 3 other women walking like me, and I joined them. I even showed them where our little cottage was. I left them, and got in the fields to get home. The cottage could be seen 5 minutes earlier, but I got the wrong road, and I quickly realized it and returned to the cross road. I was even picking flowers at that moment, to carry home, as I was sure that I was very near.

I got the other road, but that road was leading to a cliff with huge rocks.
I moved up the same road, thinking that our cottage was a bit further down. But alas! The area was full of dogs who were barking. Not a single human being out there!
The sun had disappeared behind the mountains now, and it was getting dark. I had neither water, nor my cell phone with me. Suddenly I see 3 huge dogs out in the road barking and moving towards me.
I was so scared, but I was now walking more steadily, and with the long stick I had in my hands - which I found in the fields a few minutes earlier - I was hitting the ground making some noise

I was going further down, and down in the fields, where there were NO HOUSES at all, but only stockyards with sheep and wild dogs! It was already dark, and I was still trying to find my way back home.
I was trembling in reality, but the dogs probably thought I was not afraid.

It was only the barking of dogs I could hear and nothing else. The moon looked like a piece of watermelon up the dark sky with stars shining. I was thirsty, and I started praying when I saw far in the distance on the hill some trembling lights from the village. I could see the top of the Church. I could not believe my eyes. I was so down the hill, very near a dam.

I was desperate but I should not stop moving on upwards now. I was so tired and exhausted! (Luckily my eyes got used to the darkness and I could move at least)
One prayer followed the other, and suddenly I see in a distance some lights from a car.
I had no choice but try to stop it and ask for help. I was only asking God to send the car where I was.
5 minutes later the car stopped, and the man was so curious seeing me. I explained what had happened, and asked him to tell me where I was. I was lucky to find him he said, because no one drives out in these field roads so late at night. They usually go to the sheep and leave early in the afternoon.

Well, I got so down and so far from where the cottage was, and all this because I was in a panic. We needed more than 10 minutes by car to get to the cottage.

Everyone was worried and my husband was ready to go to the police. He said that he could hear the dogs barking all the time and quess what.
It was 9.45 when I got back to the cottage.
That night I could not get any sleep, and could not even utter a word!
It was a nightmare indeed.

This is what happened to me, so now let's see who will follow, and whose experience is the most frightening!

Wow! That's a scary story for sure. Good thinking on scaring away the dogs with the stick though. It's kind of interesting how you can feel more confident just by having something in your hand to defend yourself with. If you didn't have that stick, maybe they would've attacked!

Does the above mean "Come then to New York?"

If so, is it really so scary now Yafnaf?
I was in New York 4 or 5 times in the past but many years ago.
I want to have a trip there..... so do you suggest that I move around only in the mornings? Or it is still dangerous?

I think anywhere can be a bit scary if you are alone and it is evening.

Probably Detroit, Michigan.

I was across the river from Camden this past weekend, was tempted to drive over just to say I've been to New Jersey, but then I realized I would be in Camden and passed on the opportunity.

Camden is kind of like Detroit, its just a bad neighborhood and lots of crime/violence from what I am aware of. It has been #2 in the US for a long time next to Detroit on some lists on dangerous cities.

Thanks for reminding us Martin. We have forgotten that you are a macho! ha ha!

In Ayios Panteleimonas square in Athens it is also very dangerous walking at night because of the people who came from far East and Africa and stay there. Greeks are locked in their houses early in the afternoons and are scared to go out.

Well, may not be that dangerous, but the most scared I've ever been was in Budapest. My wife and I were on our honeymoon, and we had got into a small tiff in the Castle Hill area. Well we walked down to the nearest train station to catch one of the city trains over towards the apartment we were staying at. We were holding hands (are arguments never do last long) and running to catch a train, just as the doors were closing. Well close they did, with me in the train, and Kylie outside of it. the train moves, and I see my wife still on the platform as I move away in the train. At the next stop I paid a presumably homeless guy quite a bit of money to give me directions, which I either followed wrong or were wrong to begin with. I end up walking about 20 minutes, taking trains 45 minutes the wrong direction, then 45 minutes the other way just to get back to where I was. Kylie, still at the train station, had some very shady characters moving towards her, speaking Hungarian to her, and by this time she is sitting on a bench anf crying. She got scared and got on a train as well. Well, almost 3 hours later I arrive at the apartment on Rakoczi Ter, praying that Kylie had made it back. I unlock the door and there is my beautiful wife, sobbing, and I walk in the door, sobbing. We laid in bed and held each other for an hour and a half. When I told her I was running to the store to get ingredients for dinner, she made me tell her exactly where I was going, and I had to promise not to go anywhere else...no chance of getting lost this time. This lesson tought me to always put a spare key and local currency in my wife's purse, which I had done before we left exploring that morning (I usually carry keys, money and such), and never let her leave my sight.

Aw... that's sad. It's good that she got back to the hotel in one piece! I also like to carry a business card or advertisement for the hotel I'm staying at in case there is no information like that on the key.

What an experience Wisconsin.
This could have happened to any foreign country of course!

I also carry a card from the hotel, and some cash on me.
(I never carry much money, neither wearing chains or rings and anything expensive)

My scariest experience has to be being stopped by Iranian police at night while in a small boat carrying my friend and I and smugglers from Queshm Island to Bandar Abbas in the Persian Gulf area of Iran. The police just commandeered the boat with us eight or so passengers and didn't say much until we docked. Fortunately, they let us off with no hassle but is was sure a scary 15 minute ride not knowing at all what would happen.

The problem was that the "smugglers" were bringing in cheap goods from Dubai. The group on the boat consisted of two mothers, a 14 (?) year old boy helping to support his family and an Iraqi fellow. They were all let go with us once we landed for which the smugglers were most appreciative. The Iraqi fellow was convinced that our presence helped to "save" them. Unfortunately, I never did learn the fate of the Kurdish boat owner/driver.

I have a more detailed writeup and some pics on my blog if you're interested.
