A friend is trying to decide whether she should:

1. visit the water towns near Shanghai and Suzhou

2. head to the Dong villages in Guizhou between Khali and Guilin

3. go to Yongding in Fujian with its round tower houses

Have you been to any of these? Which would you recommend?

I have not been, but the Yongding houses look incredible! Definitely super interesting...

The water towns near Shanghai seem to be really touristy, so I'd probably steer away from there...

Dong villages look very relaxing and peaceful as well...

So... Yes, I would pick Yongding...

I have visited a number of the Fujian Hakka Houses and they are pretty impressive. However, unless you are really into architecture, I find that they do start to much the same after a while.
However, I have not seen the water towns yet so i cannot provide any comparative advice.

Oh...maybe he/she could go to two places, seems like the round buildings get boring...

I went to Suzhou and Tong Li water town with a private tourist compnay and I find it really beatufil and worth a visit. If you go to Shanghai you can go to Suzhou by train of 40 minutes cost you 26 yuan. You can find many places worth a visit for example, four private gardens, the wall and Grand Canal, No1. Silk Factory. If he/she decide to go to Tong li water town it will took of 1 hour drive then you can wonder around in the city. There is a boat cruise to see city in depth from inside and it tooks 10 minutes. There is also another water town such as Zhouzhuang, Mudu but I haven't been there.

In terms of other places I can't compare between them I hope I help you.. if you have any questions I am glad to answer.
