Ok so at the end of August- beginning of September I will start my first international backpacking trip. We plan on getting a one way ticket from Portland Oregon to Dublin Ireland which is very cheap only 340 USD. Then once we have traveled Europe from 3 months we would plan our trip home which we want to include a last stop in Brazil.

My question is has anyone ever done a whole trip based off one way tickets? and if so where are they the cheapest? We will be one way from Oregon to Ireland Paris to Rio Brazil then Rio back to Oregon. All based on one way tickets since the final destinations are different.

I have come across some large prices and was wondering if there is a way I could beat the system and get them cheaper!

This doesn't really fit in this category, but yes it is entirely possible to get a good deal using this. Since you are not coming back to the same country or continent but rather doing a big loop it might be cheaper for you to do a string of one way tickets. Some companies have lump packages you can buy kind of like an around the world ticket but just for "circle the atlantic" that might be cheap. For you I think using a site like kayak.com and checking out one way tickets will get you great deals. One thing to check though, always see if the round trip ticket is cheaper than the one way. Don't ask me why, but you never know.

A one way from London to Rio can cost under $1000 pp. Right now for late July kayak is showing prices for $700 from London and like $1700 from Paris so for the best deals you might wanna try and be open about departure city and flexible with dates [1 or 2]. You might find it would be cheaper to fly to London first on a cheap carrier, then the next day fly to Rio, rather than going out of Paris. Just keep that in mind while searching for flights. The flight to Rio and from Rio to the US will be the most expensive, so be very open on your possibilities on how to do it.

Flights are probably cheaper from Portugal/Spain to South America than anywhere else in Europe.

Try skyscanner.com

As a rule now I always try to go to the middle east websites and check what they can offer- It just seems due to oil being produced in their countries they can offer cheapest and best service on flights. May sound stupid but a flight in wrong direction to change planes in Dubai etc butcould save you tonnes.

Plus gives you a chance to do a stop over at another unique country.

Just found you a good deal- london heathrow to RIO is £433 one way with taxes.

Company called TAM- through them direct, they do a lot of flights europe to S America.
