What do the following have in common -- a redundant prison, two redundant schools, a disused monastery, an unwanted granary and a decommissioned ferryboat?
Of course the title is a bit of a giveaway because what they all have in common is that theyve found new life as hotels on the shirttails of a conservation movement that has spread its tentacles around the globe.
Prize for the most stunning example of imaginative conversion has to go to the luxurious Four Seasons Sultanahmet in İstanbul whose origins as a prison probably escape most of its guests, with, as runner-up, the dainty little Kuşpuni Dağ Evi (Mountain House) in distant Ayder whose owners glimpsed possibilities in an old farm building. As for the prize for originality, it would surely go straight to the Otantik Gemi Hotel in Güzelyalı, an old ferry turned swanky hotel.
