Can anyone tell me if I can get Broadband wifi coverage for my laptop while travelling.

Not exactly sure what you mean by broadband. I do listen to radio stations on my computer when overseas.

When I am in the Philippines I have good WiFi reception at hotels and even some bars that offer it free. You can also take your own laptop to an internet shop if you want and just pay for the time. (Maybe one peso a minute.) In Asia there are many internet shops where you can use their computer or use your own.

If you were referring to a wireless modem stick then yes. FYI: some areas has poor signal for Globe and some for Smart.

Does anyone know about using the WiFi on your smartphone... without having your 3G or phone doing something to give you a huge roaming bill?

There might be places that can offer Wifi connection (but not all places as Cagayan and the Kalinga areas are pretty remote areas).

So far, the places particularly like Tabuk, Bulanao and Dagupan (located at The Province of Kalinga) offers internet connection (mostly there are internet cafes that surrounds the area). Hotels may offer Wifi access but with a minimal fee.
