I must say, I have been to Our Lady of Guadeloupe and it was quite powerful. The rest look just as good, or even more amazing.

It is a nice list. I was kind of hoping for more variety than just in India though.

You're right, it is kind of India heavy... hm... I think it's missing that one pilgrimage in Spain....do you know what I'm talking about?

Santiago de Compostela?

It's heavy on India because so many religions had their origins in India. Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, and Buddhism all originated there and aside from Buddhism for the most part they haven't spread to other countries except in the form of recent emigration. The list is aiming for diversity but it's aiming more for religious than geographical diversity, which considering the topic I think is appropriate.

I've been to the Basilica of Guadelupe and it really was pretty incredible. They're not on the list but I've also been to the Great Mosque of Kairouan, the Itsukushima Shrine, and the Daisho-in Temple, all of which are or have in the past been centers of pilgrimage. They were all really impressive as well.

I hope one day Mecca opens up to non-Muslims, that would be an incredible trip. It's not entirely out of the question in the long run either, at one point Kairouan was closed to non-Muslims but it's open now and I've heard of several other cities that opened up for the first time in the nineteenth or twentieth centuries.

Thanks for the info on the Great Mosque of Kairouan.....I had not heard of it before. It does sound like a truly awesome place to visit. Now I am putting Tunisia on my places to visit list!
