and then having to pay tax on the earnings..........Ummm....this highlights issues on so many levels!

Virginity money and tax

What are your thoughts on this?

Just the story overall saddens me.

It is a very sad reflection of the world we live in where this can happen at all, regardless of tax implications.

sad.gif The whole thing is wrong. The worst thing about it is that someone would actually pay for it... what kind of a person would you have to be?

Exactly! It saddens me that there are woman out there in this day and age that feel that it is ok to do this....and saddens me more that men take advantage of this.

There is so many levels of morality including:

Prostitution (she was selling herself)
Paedophilia tendencies (yes both were consenting age but the age gap is huge and he paid for her virginity, does that mean he would pay for someone under age?)

Yeah, no doubt. It's not like she didn't have time to plan ahead.

I'd file this under sad too. And, I hope she knew she had to pay the taxes before she went ahead with her really bad decision. Not that it would ever be worth it on any level.....

This story is actually the second time this happened. A virgin in the US actually auctioned off her virginity for some ridiculous amount, in order to pay for law school. She raked in a ridiculous amount of money, much more than this girl.

My thoughts? It's her body, let her do with as she pleases. An opportunity presented itself, and she took advantage of it. The moral issues notwithstanding, it's her life and it's just sex...I can't judge.

The men who choose to bid on her due to her virginity are messed up, must have a fetish. I mean who really wants to sleep with a virgin? It's not very fun.

I'm pretty sure this was a Law & Order episode a few years back ...minus the bit about the taxes.

However I'm totally with the German government on this one, she should pay taxes like anyone else who makes money.

Well it's not that shocking really.

In German Prostitution is legal and taxed. It's accepted culturally for someone to be a prostitute.

If you bear that in mind you can see the scenario along the lines of- girl starts off her new career with a big earner.

The unprotected part well there's talk of a medical so i'm guessing both are checked for STD's so there's nothing that shocking about that.

Onto the flip side of the man paying to take her virginity. This is actually a rather old notion, it has a lot of basis in religion and law (see braveheart). It's also a very common thing in Japan and also in relation to arranged marriages.

I do actually find it a bit weird - but at same time it's not 'that' weird.

I do wonder where she held auction- don't think ebay rules allow it tongue.gif

I don't really think it's weird, as in never heard of. But I do think that, for such a young girl, it is just too bad that there's no other way to put herself through school other than selling herself off.

My thoughts exactly, it didn't shock me, I just thought it was sad.

Good question! Was it a live auction? If so, how awkward is that?

Yeah a live auction would be crazy- does she stand there doing poses, and I reckon the bidders would be pretty weird and get very aggressive with bidding.

Oh my goodness... that would be more debasing than the actual sale of the virginity.

It's stories like these that make me not want to read the internet, or newspapers, or watch the news. It just feels me with despair and sadness.

I know there are cultures that value virginity higher than others and paying for it is one of utmost honour (See Memoirs of a Geisha) but in this day and age there should be other options.

Of course prostitution is the oldest vocation in the world and will always be, but I just find this demoralising....but each to their own....some will think it is OK, others not so much....

Hmmm... but the interesting question is, do we have a moral responsibility to try and stop it from happening? Or should ignore it because of the cultural imperialist attitude that it shows by trying to stop it?

Do you know what I mean?

Yeah, I know what you mean - and personally I think trying to stop it is pointless - it will push it underground, meaning that it will still happen, it just won't be so public.
