Hi everyone, so I am doing a Middle East Trip but starting in Athens, Greece for a week. My main trip is the Middle East- Greece is just a fun small trip added on.
Don't know much about Greece other than it looks amazing!
I need some advice of where to go and I want to minimize travel as much as possible.
Are there a couple of places- including cities, islands and off the beated track places that are worth seeing in a week?
I want the flavor of Greece and I LOVE culture (trying new foods, meeting local people, seeing art museums etc)!!! I know that this will be hard to get in a week but I guess I don't want the drunken backpacker scene.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Also does anyone know if there are any ferries to Egypt or Israel? I have heard that there have been in the past but not anymore? Is this correct? If not then I will have to get back to Athens and fly out.

Thanks,
Carolina

Sorry about that Paroshep,
I am leaving soon, I will arrive at the Airport in Athens June 30 and I should be leaving July 7th. I am guess tourism will increase in the summer months, June/July included in this?
Also should I be booking for accomodations soon too?
Thanks

Ya I will be using public transit. I am on a budget so a car rental is out of the question. Thanks mmbcross for your blog and Paroshep for the advice.
I can't wait to get out there!

I believe coming to Evia is another option.
You see Evia is actually an Island, but you don't have to get in sailing boats and lose time.
It is just one hour from Athens. - It is connected by a bridge in Chalkida.
You can come to CHALKIDA with just 6 euro with the Local Bus from the station of KTEL.

The buses leave from both the central Ktel station, and from KATO PATISIA.
The phone is 210-8317163, or 8317153.
The buses leave every half an hour.

You can have a stroll in Chalkida, and take the bus to any other destination on the Island you wish. The Island is beautiful and do have a look on the site of EVIA to check the different villages. Whatever your choice would be I am sure you will love it.
I believe this is a good idea if you don't have many days to spend.
(The dreams Island) is another option....again in Evia. This is in ERETRIA.
There are small cottages on this DREAM ISLAND...and beautiful beach.
Nightlife in ERETRIA is great!

You can also spend one or two days at SYROS another island which is beautiful and very near Athens!!!

You can have a look in my blog also and find other Greek destinations.
I hope this will help you. Enjoy your stay in Greece and we are waiting to hear your impressions!!!!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
I leave in a week and I am very excited!
This is what my friend and I have planned with your suggestions in mind. And we are staying longer than a week (10 days), which is great.
Our plan: Athens, Paros, Nafplio, Olympia (maybe Myceanae), and Delphi.
I wish we could see all the places that everyone suggested, it all sounds so wonderful, but maybe another time!
Thanks again!
~Carolina~

Nice to hear that you like living in Athens!
Is it the Sun you like most, the hospitality of people. the culture, what?

Yes, there are many events happening here, and by the way I want to ask you if you have visited the Acropolis Museum, or climbed up the Acropolis Hill to see Athens from up there.
If you did not, don't miss it before leaving back for your country.

Have you also visited any Islands? There are many beautiful Islands that you can have day trips and return to Piraeus. AEGINA OR (EGINA) is one and you will love walking in the narrow streets with the many tavernas. It is very cheap to go there. Try it.
SYROS is nice for a weekend as well.

Just spent a couple of day in Athens. It was great. The Acropolis is amazing! And yes we climbed up Filopappou Hill and saw the sun set and the Acropols light up at night! It was spectacular! Last night we arrived in Paros. A very cute little island. And already we love our host of the bed and breakfast we are staying at!

NICE that you have visited the Acropolis and the round area.

If you are in the premises of our Local Expert there, give him my regards.

Expecting to see you on the forums and let us know about your trip with many photos.
