First time to Thailand and wondered if anyone can help.

We are arriving in Bangkok on 24th April and thinking of staying 4 nights to recover from flight, see the city and may be a bit of shopping!! Lots of trying Thai food!

Has anyone caught the day time train that is advertised on www.seat61.com
The main thing is does it actually get to the Koh Samui ferry on time for last sailing at 19.00.

Train number: 43
Train classes: DRC

Bangkok (Hualamphong) depart by train 08:05
Surat Thani station arrive by train: 16:45
Shuttle bus to Don Sak Pier.
Ferry operator: Raja
Don Sak pier depart by ferry: 19:00
Ko Samui arrive: 20:30

Also is it safe to book the ticket at the station a few days before departure?

Thank you

Unfortunately I cannot help you on trains, but one thing is for sure.
Koh Samui is a wonderful island. I spent 10 days out there.
Have you made any bookings at any hotel there yet?

Yes we have - we're staying at Chaulty Towers, Lamai Beach run by an English musician and his Thai wife. We're going for Daughters Wedding at Rocky's.

I tried to add another reply yesterday but the links kept breaking.

We love Greece too. We stayed at the Roman in Paphos a couple of years ago for G. Daughters wedding on the beach.

We like hotels with a difference!!! ha ha.

Getting on with our Thailand trip I have just booked a bungalow for 2 near the Don Sak/Koh Samui ferry for overnight stay. It cost us 6.25!
Thought we should stay there for a nice meal and sleep over instead of struggling with ferry during the evening or worrying all day if we will make the last ferry on time.

The one we stayed at was the Coral Bay resort. It is close to the airport.
If you have time, just go there and see it. Unbelievably beautiful.

To be honest I did not stay at that hotel in Paphos...I did not read very good comments! At first it impressed me from the exterior, but if you stay there it gets too much...

Do yourself a favor and fly. By the time you take the train and transfer, stay overnight and catch the ferry you could save yourself the misery and already be soaking up the sun on Samui. Lamai is a nice beach, I think you'll like it. I have lived and worked in Surathunni off and on for years now-believe me -fly either straight to Samui or Surathunni and transfer to donsak for the ferry. If you take the train , take the night train. Trains in Thailand can be scetchy at best. Sometimes on time most times not. There are also luxury buses that will take you there for around the same price I believe. Good Luck, where are you staying in BKK?

Theroadshow is absolutely right. Better fly, a bit expensive but less the hassle.

Should be safer than any travel agency in the Khao San Road area if you are worrying about losing your money. But there is always the possibility of delays caused by weather, mechanical problems, etc. Like any form of transportation you should lock your bags, keep valuables with you at your seat or within sight. Some buses have problems with bags being robbed when in the storage compartment. Usually these buses are booked in Khao San Road travel agencies.

Another link on trains.
