In a region that considers pork haram (or forbidden), the UAE is lucky enough to still have it imported for the expat community. There are two outlets that sell pork (in a special hidden area of the supermarket, along with a select number of hotels that offer pork dishes).
In light of recent events however, the UAE has as tkaen a precautionary step and declared all imports and sale of pork banned across the UAE...
Does anybody know if they have discovered whether the swine flu is passed on through consumption....I didn't think it was! Do you think this is an excessive precaution?
Maybe its a way of getting rid of a "nasty" product.....I am going to go into withdrawals.

It's just a separate room really with a sign that says pork section "for Non-muslims only" I just feel naughty every time I go in there!

I see...why do you feel naughty? Do people give you looks?
I don't know I just feel naughty because it is such a taboo meat here in the region....most people shopping are expats, but sometimes you pass a local and you can see them watching you.....
I can't understand it though because the locals eat beef or veal bacon, which is gross....if something is haram (or forbidden) why eat something that tastes and looks similar

Yeah, it's an interesting thing...all those "workarounds" in strict religions.
it's the same as non-alcoholic wine and beer......but I really shouldn't judge....

Yes I have a licence for alcohol in my home, but many people don't and you can buy it without it (but not in the Dubai Emirate). If you get caught you go to gaol!
Nothing wrong with non alcholic wine, it's just bizarre that locals drink it although they are against booze....

Well my favourite crazy move in the Swine flu outbreak was Egypts slaughtering of thousands of pigs. Al-Jazeera called it a misguided effort to prevent the spread of the flu which made me laugh. ooh Egypt.
I also found this, but I don't think the media will stop using Swine flu and start using N1H1...
And I also read somewhere that Israel wanted to rename the disease Mexican flu because it was offensive to Jews and Muslims who don't eat pork... I thought this was funny in the midst of a so-called pandemic someone is worried about cultural sensitivities. hah.
