After violence and troubles, karachi now seems to be on peace. So as far as you are stick to the posh locations of Defence, Clifton areas, you will be safe.

More generally, is most of the city considered safe or only about 20% like I have heard? And, What things should be on my must see list?

Mohatta palace
A new shopping and entertainment complex near the sea called Port Grand.
Clifton beach
Boat trip on the Arabian sea

Clifton,Defence...if you are going in the city go with your local contact and bear in mind the
modest dress code.Happy journey...

for fun you should go to cinemas . new 3d cinema has open atrium at near zainab market

I did end up going in November and left unharmed. Traveled to all four provinces and took two domestic flights. Definitely not perfectly safe but visited people that were well knowledgeable about safe areas.
