This is kind of late, but might be of some help. I went a couple of days a few years ago when I was at the Goethe-Institut in Prien am Chiemsee. I loved it and can't wait til I find my way back! (Although I would offer the same warning about drunk, groping men.)

If you're looking for something not quite as big or touristy, I'd suggest Herbstfest in Rosenheim. It's southeast from Munich and only 45 min. or so by train. Once you get there, it's a short walk from the train station and not hard to find--just go in the direction most everyone is walking! I don't remember exactly when it is, although I think it happens a week or two the Oktoberfest in Munich.

Prost!

One day, I'll be there to enjoy it too.

Interestingly, I met an Irish guy at the weekend who claimed he was put off the whole thing. Apparently, there were many people around him who were shamelessly performing their toilet duties right in front of everyone.. crazy.gif

This is exactly what put me off the first time I went, but then I gave it another go and we avoided the Hofbrau. Problem solved.

I've now been 8 times. Look beyond the Hofbrau.

I'll be in Aussie next October but there's a chance I could make the 11th fest. And I'd be happy to settle for the second best room in the hotel..
