I finished work early, I was in Sri Lanka for my 60th birthday (and my companies official retirement date) I had a great time, but it never really sank in that me and work had just got our divorce I was quite full of it, but then the bubble burst, I came back home, there was a lot of paper work to fill in, but when that was done.................... I was at a bit of a loss what to do, go back to work, part time, full time ? (I didnt really need to, I had my pension, I had my savings)so do I ........... Watch daytime TV ? Go to the pub at lunch time ? Decorate the house (again)? Dig the garden (again) ? None really appealed to me, so I got Christmas/New Year out of the way and went to Egypt for 5 weeks (leaving the wife at home) Did an awful lot on not a lot of money I saw places go from being chock a block to empty in a matter of days, when they had a big party in Cairo and a few people were evicted Came back for 2 weeks, got my washing done, then took the wife back for 3 weeks, met the people I had met during my first visit Came back from there, mmm, getting bored now, I did a few jobs, but then found out I could have a wander around Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania relativly cheaply, just had to get there So I sorted that out, and now I go at the end of May I remembewr what I heard some bloke say (cant remember where though) When you retire, every day is a Saturday, and the only problem with retirement is you never get a day off, so fit in as much as you can, each and every day

I would add to that Derrick that for some people retirement should be like a Weekend. And it is on them to choose if they want this weekend to last for long or never get a day off, and sit idely watching TV, cooking, decorating again and again, and gardening. Now something that you don't know about me....it is the fact that at the age of 15 I had created a Correspondence Club and I had contributions from people wishing to come in contact with other people throughout the world. Instead of studying I had a whole business to look after and promote it, and I even earned lots of money back then. I studied when I had time. I cared only to pass my exams! This gave me such pleasure! My parents were so proud of me....I stopped asking for pocket money and there were days when the money (bank notes I received) daily were more than the money my Dad earned. Then I decided to have a monthly magazine. I printed it myself, and my sister helped with the drawings and here again I had contributions from people of many countries worldwide. Members would obviously think that I was much older. There were about 800 members those days...which was too much for me. It was called "Cosmos" which in Greek means -world. This business started when I was 15 and lasted for 6 or 7 years. So, it is not surprising that I am out here connecting in this way with so many members now. This is actually what I have always loved doing. My Pen Pal Magazine was in English. So, who else is going to tell us something about themselves that we don't know? Who is to follow?

Time you have plenty of, just put on a pair of boots and a ruck sack, you can do quite a bit with the minimum of money, just ask Greek cypriot how she does things, you may get a surprise hi derrick241, i read something in one of her posts that says she doens't even get paid for what she does nowadays. i'm intrigued with it, and admire that about her and people like her. i guess it requires a bit of an imagination though No imagination required, she does get out there and meet people, you want to suscribe to her blogs, seemsto me she knows everyone in Cyprus, she has dont quite a few reviews on hotels, she takes some pretty good pictures as well She has actually been to the places she writes about, not got it from a book I would imagine if you wanted to spend any time in Cyprus or Greece, just ask her about anything, she knows an awful lot about them Drop her a PM, I'm sure she would appreciate it

Hi and welcome to TravelPod and the forums bluegreenaide. I noticed that Derrick my friend refers to me. Yes there are a lot of other people here who travel on a budget. Believe it or not when I go to Cyprus I don't carry more than 50 or 60 euro on me. Of course I have my credit card but I never use it because I don't want to used it. It is a challenge every time for me not to spend. I know some clever tips on how to eat good food and on a budget indeed. I go where I see other Cypriots eating, I eat simple food. I don't use a taxi or hire a car, I even hitch hiked lately. I take the local and intercity buses and walk a lot! I like socializing a lot also. I even knock doors and ask to take photos of the beautiful architecture, or anything.. depending what the theme is. Of course it depends on the country. In both Greece and Cyprus and especially the Greek islands and the very small villages this is a fact. People are open hearted, and the only thing they expect is a smile or a 'hello'. I cannot count the number of times when I start talking to anybody and people I don't know......and how everybody responds! Then as Derrick says, there are budget hotels too which are very clean. You have to do some reading and searching. I remember I booked a 3* hotel in Kos for just 28 euro for two persons a year ago or two. The "Hotel4u.co" belongs to TravelPod if I am not mistaken. Most of the time I book through this site, and actually my son who is having holidays in Rhodes right now has booked for 7 nights for just 35 euro on a H/B basis. (2 persons). He and his wife are staying at a 4 star hotel and having lunch at the neighbouring 5* because the hotel has the same owners. So, reading out blogs will help you a lot as a start, but first you have to decide what you actually want and where you wish to go. Hope to see you out in the forums and also start a blog. Save all your nice photos here, and tell us about the place you live now through your blog. You don't need to travel to start a blog you know. You can start blogging by writing and posting photos of recent trips, or writing nice that happened. Keep in touch Popi
