The website RealClearWorld.com recently announced the 10 most dangerous cities of the world.

What do you think of the list? Do you agree or should some be added and others deleted?

DANGEROUS CITIES

The world's top 10 most dangerous cities according to RealClearWorld.com:

10. London, U.K.

9. Saskatoon, Canada

8. Norilsk, Russia (in Siberia)

7. Johannesburg, South Africa

6. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

5. Detroit, U.S.A.

4. Caracas, Venezuela

3. Linfen, China

2. Ciudad Juarez, Mexico

1. Mogadishu, Somalia

London?? sad.gif

This makes me sad, but I understand it.

Its funny because I wouldn't think twice about going to/living in London, whereas I would for some of those other cities, yet London is the one place I've been in the world where I feel most unsafe.

What is up with Saskatoon - why so dangerous?

I think there are numerous cities in the USA that are more dangerous than London. Quite a few in South Africa as well.

I'd probably agree with the top 2 though.

Supposedly the ranking was largely a result of a popular Canadian magazine naming Saskatoon as the most dangerous city in Canada based on 2007 crime statistics. Supposedly, the same stats don't apply in 2008 and now.

I can't seem to open the link you gave but if it is for the March, 2009 Macleans ranking of dangerous Canadian cities, then my understanding is that the list is actually based on 2007 crime stats. So once the 2008 or 2009 data are available, the argument being made is that Saskatoon will not achieve the same ranking.

Oh, I see what you're saying. Yeah, the stats they used are from 2007.

But in Maclean's, Saskatoon was at the top for two years in a row.

I would not deny that Saskatoon has been at the top the last two years but I guess the flaw I see with this ranking is that it does not seem to be using equivalent data to evaluate the "danger factor" of all the cities in the list. I have not seen what information was used for Linfen, China but if it is due to the fact that the pollution is apparently so horrendous and causing all sorts of health problems and deaths, then that criteria is far different from what Macleans used.
And if the danger ranking for each city was based on nation-wide magazines like Macleans in each country, I also doubt that each journal necessarily treated or analysed exactly equivalent statistical data. To me it seems like there is a bit of an "apples and oranges" comparison being made here.

Firstly the list is in reverse order. Both Saskatoon and Norilsk seem unlikely candidates. I think the compiler must have something against Saskatoon. Perhaps he doesn't like the name. Anyway, Norilsk and Linfen do have the distinction of being on the list of the ten most polluted cities in the world. So as aopaq states, it may be health danger as much as crime danger.

I mean Saskatoon, is at the top of the most dangerous cities in CANADA list... sorry for the confusion.

I liked this list, so I expanded on it here: http://blog.travelpod.com/2009/03/19/10-mo...s-in-the-world/

Seems like right now they should swap Saskabush for Vancouver

I understand Detroit is probably one of the most dangerous cities in the US. I am surprised that it is on a "World" list though. I am guessing they are neglecting any countries that are currently at war and mostly just focusing on non war zone areas instead. Otherwise the dynamic of the list would be a lot different.

Yes, that is definitely true since places such as Baghdad and Kabul are not included.

DH was just telling me this morning that stats are based on a per capita rating, so the results are a bit misleading perhaps......it's more the chances of being affected by crime then, not necessarily how much crime there is in a certain place.

But they also filter out the smaller towns like Whitehorse and Yellowknife because the average number is so out of whack.

And sadly, don't forget to include Iqaluit in that list! One of the rough guides I have learned to tell how much crime there is in a small community is by the size of the police/RCMP force. Iqaluit has a pretty large one if I am not mistaken.

London was included on the basis it has problems with knife crime amongst the youth. I can't see how it makes it one of the ten most dangerous cities in the world. I guess stats can be manipulated anyway they want.

I looked through more articles on that site. Load of old bollocks. Piece by Charles "Dickhead" Murray on there saying Europeans attitude is that we are simply chemicals that form and eventually dissolve, and in between we want to have as much fun as possible. This is something he said was wrong....

That is so true.... But you know what they say: "There are lies, more lies and statistics."

I personally feel the composers of such lists as this are just trying to attract readers and raise controversy, which I guess they have successfully done since we are discussing it here on TP! blink.gif
