G'day Derreck,

I noticed you are thinking of taking "A notebook laptop, and ipods, external hard drives, and flash drives, cameras, and memory cards" along on the trip may i suggest if you can afford it and have not bought all this stuff the net book is more ideal than a note book it is only 10inches and ,light as a feather. Plus what i used for my around the world trip was a Epson P2000, the new model is a Epson P8000 with a 80gig hard drive it can play movie's store all your photos all in one place and is light and easy to use no computer needed just slip the memory card into the reader and then upload it to the device and when needed on the net book just hook up the usb connection and you can upload any pics you want from it. on my holiday between myself and my wife we used up 25gig of the 30 gig hard drive space and has a big 5inch screen check it out on the Epson web site and look for portable devices, The other thing pity the weight as the Aussies have a what is called a swag all rolled into one tent come sleeping bag and is water proof and winter proof as well a having a fly screen on it. hope you have a fantastic trip i have read a couple of blogs on this trip and each persons trip was entirely different to each other, I know you have travelled before but here is a tip if you have not already done it as well photo copy all your cards passports and visa's and keep a copy with you and have a copy with your wife in case you need to get replacements the copies will ensure a faster turn around.

Cheers mate looking forward to following your journey
Stewart

Hi Stewart,
I'm not sure if its a note book or a net book, but is really small, (Hewlet Packard) it is about the size you mentioned
It has windows 7 light on it
the hard drives contain all my musis, audio books, films, they are about the size of an ipod touch, but are 750gigs each (just in case I need to change stuff on the ipods)

I bought along the films, they said people watch films and they have film nights, so maybe these may get used, but they take up no room and the delete button works well if I need data space on them)

I must say, I have never heard of this swag thing before, it seems ideal

As for photo copies, I have 2 copies of my passport, about 20 pictures of me for visas and stuf (and just in case I forget what I look like)

I have a couple of water proof bags for important stuff (money, passport, photos)

A couple for cameras, while in a ruck sack or bergen

I have a couple of those bags that you suck all the air out of for clothes (you can use a vacuum hoover or just roll em to get the air out)

I back up all my photos either on skydrive or photo bucket (I have always had a fear of losing all my pictures of places I have been to over the years, these are ideal to store them

as Popi knows I share them with people in my address book (I dont know if you are in there, but I can share them with you, I'll drop you a PM with a link)

Hi Derrick

Not sure whether this post is still alive.

I am new to this site too - although I am hoping to do possibly the same trip as you in 2014, are you doing the one with UKtoOZ or the Odessey Overland one?

I know they both start in April but one is Iran and Pakistan and the other Stans and more of China.

We want to do the Oddessey trip - not so fussed about heaps of India and thought the Stans might be good fun also I thought they supplied the tents so we didn't have to worry which sounded like a good thing as they would (hopefully) have good tents with lots of spares smile.gif

How have you found the planning so far?

I have been blog-stalking people who have done both the trips over the last couple of years, and can't wait, even though it is a couple of years to go for me and hubby.

Hope all the planning is going well and I look forward to following your trip next year.

All the best
Louise

Hi Louise,

As far as I know its still alive, and yes things are going well with planning

I'm going with UktoOZ, the big trip 28 weeks, I will be posting my blog here, please feel free to leave a reply when I start in april (so far its the 7 we move out from Hammersmith)

I havent heard anything from them about visas or anything yet, but I guess I will sometime soon

I have no idea how many others are doing this trip this year, I think there was about 20 on the trip that has just finished

Thanks Derrick - I'll look out for your blog.

I can't find anyone who is blogging on the shorter UKtoOz trip that I think left in August which goes through the Stans. Have you found anyone?

Have you practiced blogging smaller trips yet? or will your big one be it?

I was thinking of doing some practice on a 3 week trip we are doing next year to the Baltics and Russia, but that will just be for us to get used to it.

Good luck!

I have done my trip to Kenya, and one from way back, surprised you havent read them (Del's trip to Kenya)

I found a couple of blogs that have finished just before Christmas, havent found any that started in August, but drop UKtoOz a line, they generally know whio is doing blogs

There is a guy (an Aussie, Rossport) that does blogs of long and short trips, they have been interesting, and Popi (Greekcypriot) posts regular blogs of the hotels and resturants she visits in Greece and Cyprus (she has a reply in this thread, just click her name,

I think that may direct you to her profile or blogs or something)

Hi you guys ...I am out on a short trip and this morning when I switched on my mobile there were more than 10 bibs coming from TravelPod. At first I thought it would be some spam coming in as usual which I delete when they talk about asian sport shoes and bags, but I was glad to see that it is you too chatting..
I am writing through my laptop and I am at the optician right now trying to get rid of that alergy I have on my eyes lately before we move on to the next destination which is Athens.

So, it will be nice that you two are going to meet. This is what TravelPod members can enjoy. As for the new members Lukeandloumann I wish to welcome them here, and I believe Luke you start blogging so that other members can read and find out about you and your interesting trip you are soon going to be enjoying.
You see, it is no need to wait until you have the big trip but start writing about the round area, your short trips and post beautiful photos.
This is how everyone starts, and have in mind the more details you give the more interesting will be. Your contribution on the forums will also make you known to other members.
I am sorry I cannot follow more ....I am getting ready for my turn to see the doctor now.
There are lots of tears coming from my eyes...a kind of alergy and I am trying to fight against it, taking all sorts of medication given to me. I am fed up with this and I believe this visit is my very last chance.

Cheers Popi - I'll give it a go then, I am off to Egypt for 10 days in 2 weeks, it looks easy just a little daunting I guess.

Sorry Derrick - I have only really been reading those people who are doing our trip but either on Oz Bus, Oddessey or UKtoOz. Haven't really spread out. Mind you it is very interesting to follow different people on the same trip as they have different takes on things, eg the tour guide who left the trip in Vietnam on the UKtoOZ trip.

Stewart - you wouldn't know it but I am an aussie too - just lived in England too long - almost 11 years, met my hubby here too... the big trip is my way to get home smile.gif

This is a great intro to this site - so thank you all!

Louise (I am usually the one will write on this)

lukeandloumann

I'm off to Jordan and Luxor on the 23 January, I'll be doing a blog for that, where are you going in Egypt ?

A lot of Aussie's seem to use these trips to get home (and see the world or part of it on their way home) others either travel round Australia or NZ, I guess the rest go home, 7 months on the road is a long time
