Does anyone know if you can swim with dolphins in the Punta Allen area or is it a better bet to go from Tulum? Those are the two places we'll be in early April.

There are swimming with dolphin programmes all over the place in and near Cancun. My grandchildren did swimming with dolphins at Xcaret, and were blown away (by the experience, not by the dolphins).

check this out http://www.xelha.com/ is a good way to spend a day not only swimming with the dolphins, there's quite a bit to do there.

by the way there are many places where you can swim with dolphins, all of them in enclosed areas, not pools, still in the ocean. so, sharks are not a big deal...
