We are thinking about going to either Sandy Cay or Little Cay Honduras with another couple...the only thing that worries me is safety. You are in a foreign country and a sitting duck on these islands, are there any issues with safety?
The islands tend to be a pretty safe area. Cities such as Tegus and San Pedro Sula have a much higher crime rate because they are larger cities where there is much more penury, gang affiliation, people, etc. The islands are, well, islands. The fact that they are surrounded by water keeps most of the petty theives away. You will be fine in the islands if you just keep a few common-sense rules in mind:
Keep your valuables safe. Don't flaunt your possessions or wear anything that looks expensive, i.e. jewelry. Keep phones, cash, and iPods out of sight and well secured. I don't even bring these items when I go on vacation. If I do have to bring valuables, I try to stash them in the hotel's safebox.
Fork it over. If you do happen to be the victim of some petty crime, just hand over the cash, phone, or whatever. These items are replaceable, but your safety isn't.
Travel in groups. It's wise not to go anywhere alone, especially at night. Even in safe beach locations, nightfall brings in a different type of crowd.
You'll be fine and enjoy your vacation!
