Just seen your Post regarding the Chimaera at Olympus in the foothills of Tahtali Mountain which is certainly one of the most extraordinary sights in Lycia.
No one really knows what is the cause of this 'eternal flame'. Apparently about 40 years ago, oil prospectors examined the flames. They found traces of methane gas but couldn't identify anything else. The flames can be extinguished if they are covered up but re-ignite spontaneously.
Amazing!
Legend recalls that the Chimaera, a fire-breathing creature with a lion's head and front legs, a goat's rear and a snake for a tale roamed the mountain. As a matter of interest (to very few people!), its silouette is the logo of the Turkish petrol station chain, Petrol Ofisi.
